So I'm pretty positive after months of diagnosis and trouble shooting, that I'm going to need a new transmission. From all I can gather, it sounds like there is a pump whine and vibration coming from the converter. I could get mine rebuilt, but it seems just as cost effective to buy one and swap it out in a weekend. I have seen ATS has them for $2,000 w/ a 5 year 500k mile warranty. Anyone have other recommendations?

I would rather deal with a local company in case there is an issue. Now if ats is local to you go for it.

My last one for my gen 3 1500 came from a junk yard. 47k miles on it. (saw the odometer before it was removed). Gave me no trouble for 9 yrs until I sold it. $475.

Not 1st, 2nd or 3rd? No Trophy!

6 speed? When they rebuild tranny's good shops have upgrades that fix weaknesses. I would go find the best tranny shop as opposed to thinking about the best tranny. Look at Sharadon for after market tranny's if you want to spend some money on a performance upgrade.

If you want something bullet proof, you need to look at something that isn't the 545/65rfe. I would stay away from ATS, they don't hold up and are barely better than stock but if you want to stick with a built 545 then SuperStreet Performance can get you a decent 545 and try it with the new Sonnax input clutch drum, it's showing good promise.

ATS has had some pretty bad reviews regarding customer service. You might do some reading before you do business with them. There are other alternatives which IMHO are much better. Sharadon is one.

Yeah, I'm not looking to go all out or do a huge transmission swap that would require modification of my truck and new tuning/electronics. Just looking to replace the stock piece of junk and while I'm at it make it a little more reliable. I come from a duramax with a built transmission from big dipper in Maryland, and although I'm not looking to invest as much in this truck, I do want to at least have a reliable trans.

I just had my 545 rebuilt by a local shop. They put in the sonnax shift kit for me and mixed some parts from a junkyard trans I found with only 20k on it. Mine had just hit 225k and it was stock. With the 5/6 speed they only last if you drive them correctly. Lots of manual shifting. :)

Altogether 3300 and a 5yr/100k warranty. I’m happy.

I know some folks near me have used Jasper engine and transmissions with good results. No personal experience to offer.

I'll never tear up my 545. I just don't drive it that hard. Plus, I won't keep he truck long enough for it to fail.

But, if I did, I'd go 6 miles down the road, to Jasper Engine and Transmission, and tell tell the guys to build a stout 545. They would do a damn good job.

JET has really developed into a world class operation. They are no longer "Your Dad's Engine Exchange".
