The OEM brakes can exceed the braking coefficient of the tires, can't get better than that.
Now you can change them to ones that can be taylored to you style of braking. Are you planning on bigger tires? Or do you just want eye candy?

Bet if he had better brakes then no breaks would be a better bet.

Damned breaks. I’ve always wanted to upgrade brakes on the wagon but they’ve been sufficient so far.

This thread reminded me of a joke about brakes, as told be Jackie ("the Joke Man") Martling on Mark Simone's show last week:

Two guys are riding downhill in a car and the driver says, "the brakes failed!"

The passenger replies, "It's OK... there's a stop sign at the bottom of the hill."

Seriously, the OEM brakes should handle most anything one can throw at them. Not long ago, many OEM brakes were, at best, mediocre. Some dealer shops would replace them with premium stuff from Wagner or NAPA, but each driver's result would vary just the same. Many years ago, I put Stillen pads and rotors on my Jeep and they were fantastic. Looking back, I remain "on the fence" as to whether the money spent was worthwhile because I traded the Jeep before those brakes wore out. The rotors were not only cross-drilled (as opposed to happy-drilled ;) ), but the holes were chamfered to avoid cracking.

If you're racing a lot (hopefully on tracks) then yes you need to upgrade your brakes mainly for heat dissipation that near constant braking causes. Or if max towing all the time in hills. If not then unless you always drive down steep hills every where you go the stock brakes will be just fine.

Side note: my father told me many tales of the old days when everywhere he went it was always uphill and usually in snow. So I guess it's possible to always be driving downhill if you lived in the opposite side of town from him.

Mine took awhile to break in (5k-10k miles) but worked great after. I usually go with oem but did platinum from Advanced this last time. They are noisy so I'll be going back to oem again.

When towing, any grade at 10% plus is going to test the limits of the brakes of even our Power Wagon no matter what brakes are put on it. The 13% on Utah's U-143 and the 26% on California's Sonora Pass are a good test to whether or not they'll pass or fail.
