Today I'm on the highway cruising 70-75 for the most part. At one point I had to accelerate up and when I got off the gas and I happened to look up in my rear view mirror it looked like I either just blew up or I was on fire (that much smoke). It was so startling that I immediately started to attempt to get to the shoulder. It became apparent it was clearing and all seemed fine with the motor, so I continued to my destination which was near by. it didnt do it again on the trip home 350 mile round trip. I have never had an engine do this before any ideas?

Do you have a catch can installed on the truck?
If you do, if it gets over full it can cause what you are describing.

How's the coolant level? Usually white smoke means coolant is getting burned.

Otherwise how hard do you normally drive your truck? If you baby it then when you had to do that hard acceleration you just pushed some soot off the valves and have nothing to worry about.

Blown head gasket, maybe, fix it for best results. Look for bubbles in coolant and the level, also look for water in oil.

Blew smoke or blue smoke? color of smoke, did you smell anything?

I had a broken spring hose clamp on the radiator hose do that on my Dakota.
Wouldn't leak or smoke sitting still or light driving.
Took a bit to find as it was still on the rad. hose and looked to be ok but it was actually in 2 pieces.

Did you smell anything??

Im actually thinking that may of happened. Just went out now and finally checked the oil and antifreeze. Oil is perfect with no white water residue or anything on the stick. Antifreeze is perfevt orange and full at the top of the radiator.

update since post: NO other instances of this occurring again. No other issues that would lead me to be concerned so im thinking that it was as @Arth said about the valve possibly blowing so build up off.
