How much of a pain is it to bypass the A/C? Essentially remove it from the belt drive?

To my knowledge, by passing the A/C isn't bad. Removing it IS the pain.

To bypass it I believe you need a bypass belt and an extra pulley, but I'm not certain.

My next question is, the argument I hear is if the A/C isn't going then it's not drawing power, then the other side is that it still draws power when not running? Thanks for the info!

All accessories are going to take a bit of power from the system.

Merc225hp ditched his A/C about two years ago I think, but I don't recall what his thoughts were as far as a power increase.

If you don't need it and you're hell bent on ditching it, you could bypass it.

alrighty, thanks for the info. One more question lol, what all accessories can be bypassed or removed for lack of better terms for freeing up power?

A/C is the only one that's practical for anything other than the dragstrip.

If you want to free up power, get an e-fan and ditch the clutch fan.

If you're wanting to free up power, you can do lots of things.
If you want it to be used as a daily driver, you probably shouldn't. Perhaps an underdrive pulley would be easier? There's a recent thread on it floating around.
All the belt driven things on the engine can be done away with except the alternator.

You can replace the water pump with an electric one,(not recommended)
You can bypass the a/c and power steering.
(I'm having a blank moment as to what else is on these that are belt driven.)

Water pump, alt., PS pump, A/C. That's it. lol

And I personally wouldn't bypass my PS considering how damn nose-heavy these trucks are.

Yep no A/C pump/system here anymore. I my case I used a bypass pulley that mounts to where the A/C comp was, this lets me use the same belt. No messing around hunting for the right belt. As for power gain yes it would improve hp but can you feel it no, hard pressed to feel anything under say 40hp gain. Mpg will improve two to three points.

Did you buy a pulley? Or did you have to make your own bracket or what? I want to do that to my '73 because the a/c is incomplete and beyond repair anyway.
