Are you looking for just something to use on the trails or are you looking for a full blown system with a ridiculous range?

I would put a Police Scanner in it before a CB if it was me. in my area (MO.) It is hard to find anyone that talks on CBs anymore that's a big contrast to the 80s when I lived in Vallejo Calif and almost every channel had people all over them 24/7.

i just installed a Cobra C75WXST unit (the radio and controls are all in the mic unit) along with a Firestick KW3 antenna. Works great out on the road. The truckers are still using CH. 19.

Dont buy that crap with all the adjustments in the hand held....Just pic up a referbished cobra 29 ltd(some trk stops have refurbished ones for under $100)...Mount where ever you like...Be sure to wire it up to the battery with fusable link otherwise chances are you will get engine whine..Run a ground wire(not electrical)from back of cb chassie to chassie of truck and do same to ant mount..You will need a good ground plain..NEVER mount ant to plastic or a non metal surface..I never used one but those magnetic ant that you can mount to the roof seem ok..

Lots of traffic on 19 here in PA and state police are the only ones who can use radar so scanners arent always to helpful

Not sure why you refer to that unit as crap...it works darn good and I had it checked for power on the road. Puts out a nice signal without blowing out everyone else's signal.

It makes for a nice clean install in the cab as well.

Keep it civil.

If you decide to put a Police Scanner instead of a CB I recommend the Uniden BearCat 350c it is slim can be base or mobile has presets channels to get you started as well as a bank that you can program yourself and it cost anywhere from $99 to $129 depending where you buy it from WalMart was selling them.

If you decide on a CB I like the uniden / cobra 25 LTD or the next step up uniden / Cobra 29 LTD both very tough and solid performers.

Or add both! Twice the fun.

Being a FF/Paramedic I have used quite a few different scanners and CB's. I personally love Galaxy CB Radios. The Galaxy DX-939 is an amazing radio. As far as scanners go, look for a triple trunking scanner. At the FD we just digital trunking on 800mhz system which normal scanners don't pick up. The FCC is making everyone switch to the 800mhz system within the next few years. As far as brand goes, almost everyone picks uniden or radioshack brand. Its almost like debating Ford and Chevy. You can get into some serious cash with scanners. Personally I like the Uniden Bear Tracker which has GPS and scans nearby radio frequencies. Just don't get suckered into GRE brand as they are now out of business. Same thing with antenna brand. You'll notice most semis using Wilson antennas but they are just hideous looking. I went with Firestik antenna because you can get different colors. They work amazing. One hooked up to CB, one to the scanner.

if you have the money connex are good radios. not exactly small though, might be difficult to mount without it sticking out a lot. i have a connex 3400hp with a browning antenna along with a road king 56 mic and i can get out a long ways with it. i think its all going to depend on how much you want to spend on your setup. uniden and cobra are good radios imo. connex and galaxy are better yet but you also pay more for them. if you go with a uniden try to stay away from the little black pro510xl. they suck. haha
