I just bought a 2012 Ram 1500 Laramie crew with 5.7 L Hemi. It has 37k miles. It looks and runs great....looks show room new. It was purchased on the used lot of a large well known VW dealership.
After putting about 80 miles on the truck the check engine light came on. When I left work yesterday the light came on instantly when I started it and has not gone off since. Total of 70 miles driven since it came on. The truck was running fine. The only thing I noticed is that after check engine light came on, the truck will no longer go into MDS mode (eco light). The truck is still getting 19mpg or higher even with the light on and no MDS. I had it scanned at Auto Zone and the code was #7 misfire detected.
I drove 35 miles home and pulled #7 ( last cyl on driver side) plugs and to my surprise they looked good. I was assuming that the previous owner probably did not changed them at the 30k mile interval that Ram suggests... but judging by the plugs they do not have many miles on them. I also pulled the plugs from cyl #4 to compare and they look the same. I went ahead and switched the plugs. I drove 35 miles to work this morning. Truck runs fine but light is still on. I put some Lucas fuel system cleaner in it last night as well.
One other thing I noticed is that the dealership did an oil change (probably when they cleaned it to put on the lot) and they wrote 5w40 Syn. on the reminder sticker. Not sure if they really put that oil in or wrote down the wrong number. How urgent is that I change the oil. One other bit of information is that according to the carfax sat on their lot for about 3 months.
Here are some pictures of the plugs. Do these look normal and in good shape? I have never pulled plugs on a Hemi. I did notice all 4 plugs I pulled had the same black spot on one side of the ceramic near the electrode.
