Chassis number cross referance

OK I'm not sure if I'm in the right place or not but I just bought a 2000 Dodge Dakota and it has two different Vin numbers on it. The Vin number on the dashboard matches the one on the title but there is a different vin on the door sticker. So I'm wondering which one actually goes to the vehicle is there another vin on the chassis that I can cross reference? It has a new engine so I can't use that. i think there is a lien on the title and the owner swapped it for a clean one. I suspect but I cannot confirm. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I want to get the facts straight before I take legal action against him. Thank you

More than likely the door has been replaced at some point. With the sticker still on more than likely it came off a truck of the same color.

Check the other door, and the hood. vins on those
