I am trying to find the towing capacity of my class V receiver. A sticker on the receiver says "Hitch Assy Class V 20K D2." I assume the 20K means 20,000 pounds but there are two different ratings for most hitches one is "load bearing" and the other is "load leveler." The truck is rated at over 30,000 pounds towing capacity. Can anyone tell me whether the 20K is for load bearing or load leveling? Also do you know what the tongue weight rating would be?

Thanks,

Gary

the tow rating i believe is for a 5th wheel/gooseneck type hitch. Pulling 20-30k on the rear will make your truck sag massively and will be a lot harder to control going down the road.

When talking about tongue weight, that is something you will have to figure out via your payload. If your payload is 2400lbs, you weight 300lbs, and the tongue weight of your trailer is 1800lbs, then you are ok due to that total weight being 2100lbs.

the 20k limit you saw on your receiver is probably what that receiver's max weight/rating, and you shouldn't exceed that amount. If you want to pull more than 20k pounds, get a gooseneck or 5th wheel (depending the type of trailer you are pulling). It will be much safer for you, the truck, and everyone else on the road.
