I'm thinking about adding a cold air intake on a stock 05 Hemi but before I decide, I'm curious to know if the truck will need a tuner. She already has a flow master super 40 with the stock resonator only for a mild rumble, not so much for performance. The previous owner put a K&N filter in the stock air box. My reason for asking is, I put an intake on a different dodge vehicle (ok it was a pt cruiser, blasphemous I know) and the acceleration went straight in the toilet so I ended up putting the stock intake back on, therefore wasting time and money. I'm also curious if fuel economy might improve at all. Any thoughts?

I would rather not. If I need one I probably wont bother with the cold air intake.

Some engines are very picky. If you install a cold air intake you will need to disconnect the battery for at least 5 to 10 minutes. After reconnecting it you then start the truck and let it idle for at least 10 minutes to reset the pcm. Shut it off and let it cool down. The restart your truck and again let it idle to temperature before going anywhere. Doing this lets the engine management system reset the fuel air curve to the new intake. A tuner should not be needed unless you want to tune for better fuel economy or performance.

Good info. My ultimate goal is maximizing fuel economy. I just want to avoid having to do both intake and tune all at once. The idea of a chunk of change like that inclines me to leave it stock. I would like to be able to drive it with just the intake for awhile to see what I get out of it. Possibly add the tuner later. Is there a noticeable difference in economy and or performance with just the cold air intake?

You may notice better torque and possibly mpg with a good Cold air intake. But do realize that it will be noisier than stock. Most times you will be alright without a tune for a while. But you will want to eventually get a tuner for your truck.

You do not need a tuner for a CAI. If you make a bunch of additional mods like bored throttle body, headers etc., then you will want a tuner to get maximum benefit.

The drop-in filter is better than stock, but the articulated stock intake hose is costing you flow.

The two most commonly recommended true CAIs on RF are Vararam and S&B. Both shield the filter from engine compartment heat and draw cooler, more dense outside air.

Open filter designs (AFE, K&N etc. ) are better than stock, but do nothing to provide cooler air. They are also louder than $hit under the hood and in the cab.

Best value would be a smooth carbon fiber intake tube from the stock air box with an after market drop-in filter--but no one seems to make a reasonably priced and good looking intake tube. Yes there are some, but they're either cheap looking or not cheap.

I have the S&B and get everything I need from it--I like the better than stock look. A lot of the gear heads on RF like the Vararam for the ram-air effect on their 1/4 mile.

I found a post here on the Airaid tube system for the stock air box. I think this is the way to go since I already have a K&N filter. Im not keen on the noise from an open intake, nor the price of a closed one. The only thing better would be just finding a smoother version of the stock tube I think
