I am new to this forum, I recently purchased a 15 ram 5.7 reg cab. I haven't done anything to it but bed liner, window tint, and just recently a cat back system.

I'm wondering what your guys thoughts are on some cold air intakes. Which one to go with on a college student budget.

CAIs are one of the easiest mods a non-mechanic owner can make.
However there are a lot of naysayers who don't believe they do anything--despite some pretty good dyno and testimonial evidence to the contrary from RF 1/4 milers.

You could easily afford a drop in aftermarket filter now that should help some, while you save your pennies until you can afford a Vararam or S&B.

You are not going to get WOW! performance from any CAI, just a little or a lot more throttle noise from under the hood and maybe a lil sumpt'n in the butt dyno.

Open CAI (K&N, AFE, AIRAID) make A LOT of noise under the hood under load.
S&B and VARARAM give a little (I think a reasonable amount of) throttle noise, but allow your exhaust note to introduce the truck not a sucking whine from under the hood.

I'm sure there will be more positive and negative endorsements to follow.

If ~1 to 4~ tenths of a second on a track in a quarter mile are important to you, it's understandable.

If you like the sound and the look, it's understandable.

Other than that, meh,,,

I would love to cam swap the truck but that's not really financially possible.

I want the truck to sound nice and of course want performance. After the intake I'm going to lower the truck and add sway bars. (Once again, finances).

As far as intake goes. I don't want a system that falls apart and goes into the engine or one that doesn't filter well. So that is where my question was pointed to.

Thanks for the input.

Drop in filter isnt much different than a full intake. They add hp they sound better than stock and are a hell of a lot cheaper. Like 2-300 bux cheaper. 50-60 bux is what one costs. What sells the cai is looks and a name mainly. What helps the overall little performance you get is a smooth intake tube and free flowing air through the filter. Remember the most important thibg is more air flow. Its all personal preference though. I just cant justify a 350 dollar intake when i dont race a drop in and more of a stock look works for me. Plus if **** falls apart i have a warranty to fix it.

Drop in filters do not add any hp unless you are replacing a clogged factory filter.

The benefits of a true cold air intake come from drawing in cooler outside air, using a cone shape filter with a much larger surface area, a smooth intake tube that is less restrictive than the accordion shaped factory tube, and heat dissipation.

Vararam has proven to be the best performing intake at the track simply because it is the only intake that pulls in air from the front grille which is the coldest air you are going to get. It also does not have any 90* bends in the tubing which gives a more direct shot of air into your intake manifold. It also seals off to the insulated liner under your hood to prevent any engine heat from being sucked into the motor. And finally, it has a heat shield under the airbox that prevents engine heat from soaking into the airbox. With all this extra air does come more dirt and bugs though, so the filter will get dirty faster.

The S&B is a close 2nd when it comes to performance and will offer a little more protection to the filter if you live in a dusty area. It has 2 inlets to bring in twice the air as the stock airbox, has a smooth 4" intake tube that tapers down to 3.5" at the throttle body, has a big cone filter with a lot more surface area than the stock panel filter, and an enclosed airbox that keeps engine heat away from the filter.

You probably are not going to feel the gains from an intake at part throttle, but they are measurable at WOT. Doesn't matter if you are on the street or at the track, when you go WOT, that is when you will feel the gains of a true cold air intake.

Student budget = GRADUATE first, then you can afford to do anything you want.

I got one off of ebay that has a wrinkle black finish and an intake box and filter for $89 shipped. Looks identical to some of the 2-300$ intakes and makes the same noise too.:naughty:
