I have a stock 2008 Ram 3500 6.7 cab and chassis. Had P0087 several months back. Replaced the fuel filter, cleared the code, and have not had an issue.

Last week, lost all power, coasted to a stop. I saw only P0087. Towed it to a local ship. They took a look and said that the fuel tank collapsed. I’ve not heard of this before but I believe it is a plastic tank and I see a few instance of this online.

The shop suggested replacing a lot more than just the tank. They’re stating that other elements could be contaminated and that they would start with tank, fuel pump module, injector pump, control actuator, heater element, pressure sensor, and etc. This is to the tune of about $6900.

I’ve never worked with this shop but they did get great reviews online. My questions are:
1. Has anyone experienced a tank collapse. If so, what was the cause.
2. If there is a reason to replace more than the tank, id like to do so in phases. For example. While I have the tank out, I think id just go ahead and convert to the FASS pump/filters. Then see if there is anything else that needs to be replaced. I’m really up in the air. I’m trying to get this vehicle back on the road reliably while spending the lead amount of money. Thoughts?

Of course. I've never experienced hissing/air rushing in to the tank.

I understand that if the tank vent or the fuel cap are not venting, ill get a vacuum. I've just never heard of one collapsing because of this.

What I'm asking here is whether people have had similar issues and if a catastrophic collapse would contaminate the majority of my fuel system. My thought is that it's a bit ridiculous to go replacing a bunch of parts that could be "potentially" contaminated. I'd start with the tank and the lift pump.

The second question was whether it makes sense to go with the FASS lift pump/filter system. I had a 98.5 5.9 and the lift pump failed. I didnt notice and the vp44 failed. I don't know if the 08 6.7's in-tank assembly is a weak link or if I should just replace with stock. Seems like not too much more costwise.

Yes, look inside the tank. If there's a bunch of crud in there that popped off when the tank collapsed, then you need to do some fixing.

I'm enough of a cheapskate that I might attempt to use compressed air to "re-inflate" the tank.
