I'm in the process of switching from a 2011 ram 1500 to a 22 or 24 2500. I pull a 7k TT maybe 4 times a year, otherwise daily commute of 40 mi. Pulls the trailer ok in the western states, but feels like it needs a little extra in the mountains. I know I'm probably at the limit of towing with the 1500 5.7, Gulf coast traveling is pretty good.

I see a lot more 6.7 diesel for sale than the 6.4 gas. Is there a reason for that. I like the idea of having the extra torque of the diesel, but have always had gassers.

Has anyone had issues with diesel in the ram 2500. Re: maintenance costs, service, etc.

Any thoughts would be good, thanks

Emissions for diesels thats only reason but it depends on what state your in laws ect the stupid DEF and filters are expensive.

EGR Coolers are the reason, it is a horrible deal for used diesels. Particulate filters and coolers can gum up and you will be 20k in the hole and none of it will address internal parts. Only guys should buy diesels are ones that need them, for 7k pounds trailer I'd look at good geared hemi. The best chance at a good diesel is one that will be driven freeway miles and past freeway miles. But that is no guarantee either. The found a way to destroy the best most reliable engines out there, now it is a crap shoot, and expensive gamble.

The issue is your 545 probably matched with 3.55's? If you like your truck just regear.

I’ve pulled campers pushing 12,000lbs with a 6.4, 66RFE, 4.10 gears! With WDH and bags, it pulled everything comfortably in the hills, at freeway speeds, winds and rainstorms! Quite often over the PowerWagon’s ratings as far as weight goes!

Gas mileage is dismal in the hills, but it’s still a joy for me to drive!

If I towed weight daily, I’d probably look for older 12valve Cummins with a 5-speed!

I have a 21 Ram/Cummins and pull a 30 ft TT that weighs just under 7 k lbs. wWe travel in the summer months (3-4) then spend fall, winter, spring in Florida. So most of the year the Ram is my daily driver, much of the time doing very short trips.
56 k miles right now and maybe 30-40 % of that is towing. And I baby the truck most of the time but I do get on it once in a while.
Have not had any issues with any of the emissions crap ( knock on wood). Ive only seen the regen message twice, and both times I was arriving at my destination so it never finished ( as far as I could tell).
That’s my story.
