Considering Plastidip...

I apologize if there's been a 100 threads about this already, but I'm considering plastidip for my wheels mainly cause it's cost effective and removable if I happen to hate it. I've heard good and bad stories about the durability and overall longevity. I currently have stock chrome clads and am interested in going all black. I was thinking that I'd remove the clads, clean the actual wheel, and get the plastidip done "professionally". Any advice/recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

When I had my Dodge Dakota, I didn't want to spend the money on new Wheels. I did the Plasti Dip with cans and it lasted for years with no issues.

Gotcha. Is it around the same pride? Durability about the same? I’m not expecting indestructible, but it would be nice to have them for a couple years or so.

I have a buddy who does it on his wheel in the winter time to protect his chrome. He uses the clear plasti-dip and it works great.

I am contemplating doing a flat white plasti-dip on my whole truck with my rhino liner accents

I have it on my grille and it's gotten a little beat up.

I'm contemplating using superwrap for my wheels but I can't find a lot of info out there. It's a glossy coating, similar to plastidip.

I plastidipped my wheels a few months ago, it's holding up great. Been through mud, dust, car washes, snow, salty roads, no peeling or anything. I just did it right over the chrome clads, I didn't even take the wheels off. Just make sure they're nice and clean and put plenty of coats for durability and for ease of removal later. I do suggest masking the tires though. I didn't because the YouTube videos make it look easy to remove but it's kind of a pain because toward the edges it's really thin and comes off in really small pieces

I’ve plastidipped multiple things on some Toyota’s and a Hummer I used to own. It always faded and peeled over time from wear. I always wound up peeling it off and buying “black parts”. That said I’ve seen people have it professionally done and it lasts a lot longer. Seems like the sprayer applies a thicker coat than straight from the can.
IMO if your looking to do your wheels, why not buy the wheel skins? Seems a lot easier and they look pretty good.
If your gonna dip yourself, be sure to apply a thick enough coat to peel it off easily. If not, it comes off in little pieces and it’s a PITA to remove. I had to use goo-gone to remove it from my roof on one of my Toyota’s.

Plastic dipped mine with a rattle can. Has lasted through last year's winter.

Cleaned entire rim with dish soap. Dried, wiped down with rubbing alcohol. Masked off the tire and sprayed 4 coats.

Gotcha. Thanks for the info. I was thinking the plastidip would be more brittle if it was on plastic rather than the actual alloy wheel? Interesting. You’re truck looks good btw!

Ty. I wouldn’t plastidip anything large. Maybe emblems that’s it (which aren’t that expensive to by black). I dipped a grill on my H2 and had to deal with all the rock chips. PITA.
That said....keep checking CL, OfferUp, Letgo and eBay for used parts in the colors you want.

I did it to my chromies. Put down 3 coats of black, 2 pearlizer, and 2 clear. You can see the process in my picture below. Have had it on now for about 2 years. No issues. Just clean the surface really well first, then use playing cards to keep your tires from getting painted. Also use plastic bags in the spokes to keep everything clean.

Just make sure you clean the wheels with a solvent including the bead edge around and down to the tire and then apply the coating from a low angle as too get it around the corner
Acetone works well as a cleaner
You can mask off tire with newspaper if you wish and use a razor blade to then sever the plastidip at the junction/bead area once it is cured.
A couple of lighter coats to establish a bond and then while still tacky start application of heavy coats. Say 4 good coats after that.
Too thin ? removable without a lot of work.

What about brake calipers? Or would you just use covers at that point?

I’ve wrapped headlights, tail lights and fogs as well as few interior parts and some displays. Haven’t tied rim yet but after my shoulder procedure that’s my plan. As far as durability goes, I can only guess it will be as good as Plastidip. I’ve used it on my Tahoe grill and it didn’t last and I’ve seen it come off some of the emblems also. Not sure about the wrap either but it’s not permanent and isn’t a pita to get off. Go slow, don’t stretch while heating, only after and you’ll be surprised at the results you can get. Or go with plastidip if you feel more comfortable. Prepare the rims the right way and either should work out for you..
