I noticed that my truck's cooling fan is always on, even right after starting the truck when the engine is cold. My truck is totally stock, so I'm not running an aftermarket fan. Is this normal? If it's relevant, on average my coolant ranges from 200-215* once it gets up to temperature. Lately I've also noticed that, when cold, there's a faint whooshing sound coming from the engine bay that goes away after 20 minutes or so of driving. Could this be fan-related?

Specs of the truck?

If you have a mechanical (belt driven) fan, then yes, it will spin any time the engine is running.
The mechanical fans have a viscous clutch that couples the fan to the pulley. When the engine is cold, the clutch allows the fan to turn slower than engine speed, which moves less air. As the engine temp comes up, the clutch engages so that the fan speed matches engine speed.

The truck has ~40,000 miles and it has the 5.7. I was just doing some research and I found that a lot of vehicles don't have the fan running all the time, so I was just making sure mine wasn't doing anything out of the ordinary. Thanks for the info.

Vehicles that use electric cooling fans will almost always run the fan usually on a low speed any time the AC is on. The AC is enabled when any of the defrost modes are selected.

I have a 2014 Ram with 5.7 Hemi (entirely stock) and I too have loud fan noise...it roars! Funny thing is if I drive at freeway speeds for over an hour, it suddenly stops, and I then have a quiet motor that hums beautifully and sounds like a hemi powered Ram instead of an air boat on a Florida Swamp (even on cold morning starts). Temperatures do not matter. Dodge dealer says they can't replicate it so therefore they cannot help me. I am ticked big time. I do not care what the tech says (or his computer) I have driven enough trucks over 40 plus years, I know the fan should not be doing that which is supported by the fact it stops anytime I drive an hour or so at freeway speeds which around here are 65-80 mph. Can anyone provide advice or do I have to go directly to Chrysler?? Also, if I drive around town for a week or so, the fan noise comes back....until I go back out on the freeway like I explained.

Bad fan clutch.

These Rams still use a mechanical fan clutch to disengage the mechanical fan. They fail. When they do I've seen performance like what you are describing.

Hi Smsmith,
We understand your frustration. Unfortunately, as you know, the dealer cannot address your concern if it cannot be duplicated. With that said, if you are able to replicate this and would like to have your dealer look into this again, you may also send us a private message and we will gladly have a case escalated in your behalf.
