I have a new 2014 Ram 2500HD with a 6.4 Hemi. On my paperwork it shows that I have a 32 gal gas tank. When I fill up I had about 80 miles to go till empty. After filling I could only put 25 to 26 gals in. Any thoughts?

Thanks,
Calvin

Well if you only average 13-14 MPG then that sounds correct. Plus, the DTE is usually off a bit meaning you can go further than it says. There's no way you could have 80 miles til empty AND add 25-26 more gallons to a regular gas tank.

All sounds good to me.

And I believe the next smallest size is 26 gallons. So you for sure have the 32 if you can add 26 gallons when there is still gas in there.

Me too!!! i filled up the other day DTE said 60 miles till empty, and the thing only took 26 gallons or so.. i was like wait a sec.. this thing has a 32 gallon tank..with the " extra 5.4" gallons.. so is it 26+5.4 or is it 32+5.4?? I think it is 26+ 5.4. The dte estimates like 300 or so out of a tank, i think i can squeeze real close to 400.

I have the 32 gallon tank on mine. My gauge said empty and I could only get 28 in mine. The dealer told me that they do this so you won't run out of fuel and burn up the fuel pump. Pretty smart if you ask me!

For many years "E' has not meant empty. There is plenty of reserve left when you're at "E".

"80 mi to empty" / 14 mpg = 5.7 gal (or so) remaining in the tank.

5.7 gal + 26 gal to fill it back up = 31.7. Close enough to 32 gallons to say you have a 32 gallon tank.

i believe that for many years the manufacterers have been required to have the fuel gauges calibrated so that there are 2 gallons remianing when the gauge says empty

not every vehicle produced complied as float gauge wires could get bent a little for starters and other factors as well
