Just wondering what kind of life expectancy I will get out of a Cummins? Used as a daily driver, snow plowing, towing the boat weekly during the summer months and some long over the road trips (not towing...yet). I not to familiar with disel engines.

There are guys on the cummins forum completely stock with emission over 400K miles and still going strong.

To be honest, don't worry about it just drive it. Don't let the paranoid people get to you and don't over think it. It's just a truck, it doesn't need anything special

A properly maintained and well worked Cummins will easily last 250k with hardly any compression or power loss in just about any driving conditions. How much it lasts past that depends on on how it is used. A lot of cold stop/starts with high idle time and short city driving then you might be close to an overhaul not to long after 250k. Lots of long highway driving while keeping idling and cold starts to a minimum and it could probably go two to four times that many miles if not more. Of course you will likely be replacing turbos, injectors and a few other items in those miles.

Officially, Cummins gives the 6.7L a B10 rating at 250k and a B50 rating at 350k. A B10 rating means that 10% of all 6.7L engines in operation will require major repairs or an overhaul at that mileage and a B50 means that 50% of all 6.7L in operation. All this depends on the conditions stated above and where your driving habits lye. Keep in mind that these engines go in a lot more than just pick-up truck too.

Like stated above: All depends on the owners maintenance habits/routine as well as & probably most importantly - driving style/habits!

Drive it like a civilized human!
I honestly see 400K easily obtainable if the owner does his or her part.

Limit power adding mods as much as possible.
This is what gets most into trouble.
Some can handle staying out of the pedal - most can't.

Anywhere from 1 mile to 1 million miles lol. You could take perfect care of it and get a ****. I’ve seen people with horrible maint and get tons of miles out of their trucks. I’d plan on 200-250k on any engine these days without problems.

You can easily achieve 400K with all routine and recommended mileage services being performed + keeping up with the recalls and technical service bulletins.

We’re running 4 6.7 Cummins in a few of our F650’s and a Freightliner that range from 180-300k miles while hauling anywhere from 24-32k pounds daily. And only none of them had had to have a rebuild yet. They’re all just as strong as when we bought them. They’ve had a few injectors and turbos though along with a trans or 2. But that’s a different story.

As ST stated, they put engines in a LOT of different vehicles. The company I work for runs a lot of Freightliner M2's & they all have the 6.7. Ours are straight trucks with 26' beds & run 2-300 miles with 20-30,000 gross on them daily. They still have power & compression when we sell them off at 4-500,000 miles on them. The biggest ticket item we have to replace is the turbo, which on average fails around 250,000mi. for us. More than likely you will get tired of the truck before the engine gets tired on you.

Sorry... I thought my computer was locked up. I hit post reply & it didn't show it was doing anything. So I did it again, again, & again! LOL Next time I will have my kids show me how to use this thing! LOL

This forum does that for some reason? Had it happen to me a few times.
