Has anyone adapted or built a round dinner-plate type intake filter housing for the 4th gen ram? Thinking about changing my stock airbox out for a cai, but want to do it a little bit retro 2954550b54974428ad2be9d54ca0f33d.jpg

I understand you want to go retro however doing the dinner plate style intake will hardly be a “cold air” intake at all. The design that has it sitting off to the side is the best way to get cooler and and still have a filter protected from debris. The only exception is the Varam intake that Moes performance sells but that intake worries me just because I feel like it will eat dirt and dust when off-roading. If you have a street truck though it’s be perfect.

I wasn’t quite awake yet when I wrote it. Doesn’t necessarily need to be a cold air intake, just was thinking about changing out intakes. Might build a traditional type cai if the dish type turns out to be not feasible. I haven’t taken the stock parts off to see how my tb is oriented or to see what I’ll need yet.
Figured that if someone else had taken this route I’d be ahead of the game

The 4.7's throttle body faces straight ahead, while the 5.7's faces up.To build a center mounted retro style aircleaner on a 4.7,is going to take some artful fabbing with piping to have the aircleaner sit on top of the center of the engine.Anything can be done, but in this instance I don't think it's really worth it,as the bends you'd need in the piping would probably hurt the airflow into the engine, and the 4.7 is already down on power. All the power to you,if you do manage to fab something up though.

Carb hat is roughly 6”-6 1/8” in DIA. The ram TB is like 3” or 4” or something. You would need a 3” to 6” silicone or rigid reducer to fit one. The. You could run an offset 14” air cleaner and it would work fine. I recommend the Circle track spun aluminum as they have a radius inlet to increase flow.

Variaram works good. But it’s cheaper to keep everything the same size as the stock TB.

Thankfully my experience as a plumber gave me some artful piping skills working in cramped spaces so I should be able to deal with it. I would imagine having one single bend in the airflow would be less restrictive than going through the grill, hard left into the pipe, up into the air box, hard right to the collector, and then hard left into the tb.
So far I’m still seeing the biggest challenge to be getting the vacuum hose from the valve cover and the mapp sensor fabbed into the air cleaner pan
