Hey everybody, I'm new to the forum here. Just bought a 2006 3500 Dually, 5.9 6-speed. Flew halfway across the country to buy it and drove it back home with no problems. Love the truck!
Anyways, I'm working on a project to mount my cell phone in my truck.
Thought you guys would be interested in following along with my progress. I do 3D modeling and I built a 3D printer, so I'm prototyping a clip that will attach to the dashboard in a non-destructive way.
So far, I've got a pretty good clip designed. Now, I've got to design a way to tie it all together and something to hold my phone and charger. Let me know what you guys think of the location. I can print it in grey too, so it will match the dash color. I only have black filament right now though.
Mounting Location:
I decided to locate it on the right side of the instrument cluster. I like the location for the phone, and I liked the shape of the bezel for designing a clip. It has plenty of opposing angles to latch onto.
Clip Prototypes
The bottom clip you see is just to prototype the actual clipping profile. The actual finished product will have a wider clip area.
The upper clip is great because it angles in towards the top. This firmly locks the clip in place and prevents it from sliding up or down the dash.
SketchUp Model
Here's the model in SketchUp. Still a lot of work to do, but I'm really happy with how firmly the clips holds onto the dash. I'm thinking of designing it so you can fit different attachments to the clip. So I could have a custom cell phone dock, but then detach it and put a GPS dock on. Or if I get a new phone, I can print a new cell holder and swap it out. Stuff like that.
