It’s all a matter of personal choice, just like color, tires and wheels. It took a little time for me to get used to the rotary knob over the column lever. Now I have no problems going to the knob.

My 2016 Ram has 3 round knobs right next to each other. The shifter, radio and A/C. I like the idea of each having their own shape so that I can tell by feel alone what is what. The way it is requires a glance to confirm I’m not shifting into park at highway speeds! At night it’s worse. There should be a standard so all, vehicles have the same shape from the factory. Freedom to change afterwards but I like the idea of being able to differentiate by feel alone. Just like in airplanes...

Agreed, way too many round knobs in a small space. Personally I'd like a version of the old chicken head knob from Fender amps for the shifter. If someone could adapt this to fit the Ram shifter I'll bet they'd sell like crazy!

Just realized one problem with this, or any knob with a pointer, is that if you shut the engine off before putting it into park, it moves to park without turning the knob, then the knob locks. So you'd have to make a knob that could be pulled and re-indexed. Maybe a 2-piece knob with an inner part that secures on the shaft, and the outer part which is spring loaded and can be pulled out and re-indexed?

Or maybe I should just accept the round knob...

I got my inspiration from highway tractor, those custom push pull valves like knuckles and knifes. So ive been working on a brass knuckle shifter for now prob will be 2 pieces, if it works out well maybe make someothers too!

I’m with Scottly with the plug/shifter handle update system! If you happen to work at a place with all the other trucks, it’s hard to break the habit of reaching behind the wheel. Though I also occasionally adjust my stereo volume and/or heater fan while making my move to backin her up too!

I was thinking about a revolver cylinder, one bullet in it, the other chambers empty, with the bullet rotating to each gear selected. Turned out to be a really cool idea that would be ridiculously cost prohibitive.

anything beats the factory knob...I've been searching for one and this is the only one I've found:

Well, I had a Jeg's gift certificate and this happened to be available so I ordered it (still ridiculously priced!!). I'll post some pics when it arrives and let y'all know if it's made of gold or something.

I like the revolver idea, but would want a fully loaded cylinder so that I don't have to re-index anything if the wife forgets to put it in park. Does the selector pull off like old school radio buttons or is there more involved?

You know...The knob still has to be rotated back to the park position even if it auto parks.
It doesn't just continually go around in a circle endlessly.
There is no "re-indexing" necessary.

Mine doesn't. If I forget to put in park before shutting it off, the knob does not rotate back when the truck puts itself into park and my sticker ends up out of line.

I installed the silver (Aluminum) shift dial from the Sport and above trims in my Big Horn... I LOVE it!!!

Something to consider is the land rover also has the dial shifter,it looks similar and may fit and pending on the trim level they look very nice.
