Trying to decide if I should pull the trigger on upgrading to a 1500 crew with 8spd, I have owned a 1500 black edition quad cab with a 6 spd for about 4 months. Chrysler is offering the 0 %for 72 mo apr till August so I was thinking of trying to make the jump. Any thoughts? Looking at slt or express

I would say its worth it if the new truck has the 8spd w/ 3.92 gears. And you atleast upgrade a trim level without getting bent over by the dealership

I drove home yesterday with a 2014 Laramie Limited with air suspension, 5.7L and 8 speed...nice rides and they offered great finance or rebates. I recommend the air suspension as the ride is incredible and the Limited package is one nice truck.

I love my 8-speed w/ the 3.92 gears!

But as much as I love it, I'm not sure I would be okay with the financial loss I'd take swapping out a 4 month old vehicle. If you financed, it's probably going to hurt alot. If you paid cash so you owe nothing, it's still going to hurt -- just not as much.

I started talking to a dealer a few days ago, they offered me about 1000 less than what I owed. Not sure if I could do much better, I may try round two and run the numbers again. At the end of my loan I'll pay just over 3300 in finance charges, so I just figured I could put that into a nicer truck instead of giving they to a bank.

If you haul allot of passengers in the back seat, then I would say go for it. Big jump in room to stretch out. I like how I can fold up the seats, extend the plastic foldouts for storage. A grand isn't bad to loose for comfort.

two ways to look at this.

1.) You're ONLY losing a grand after owning a truck for 4 months. That's really not bad in the grand scheme.

BUT

2.) At that number you've lost $250 per month you've owned the truck.

Looking at it by the numbers, you lose a grand on your truck plus the 3300 in finance charges or $4300. Amortized over 72 months, that's only about 60 bucks a month. The 8 speed will save you a little fuel, but not a lot really, and it will probably be offset by the heavier crew cab. But, if the added utility of the crew cab means you can carry people more comfortably than before, and you do it on a regular basis, I say go for it.

I love my crew/8spd. The only thing I'd do differently is get the 6'4" bed instead of the 5'7" (the shorter is fine for my purposes, but it is a limiting factor for future home projects haha), and I'd get the 3.92 gears instead of the 3.21s.

Also something to run the numbers against is your current APR vs. new. If you get the 0% APR and you didn't have that previously, you could be able to eat up that trade-in loss in finance costs savings alone. The 0% is one of the main reasons I got mine actually. At the time we bought the Ram, we were replacing a minivan and assumed we would get another minivan, but it was 'truck month' and they were offering 0% APR for the term. That worked out to us either getting the Ram, or the tiny pee-pee minivan at a payment that was actually about $20 a month higher than the Ram. The signature shows the obvious choice in that situation. Good luck. And hey, you don't really lose in either situation as long as you're happy.

Anything to get out of a black truck sounds wonderful!

Crew cabs are the deal. It's very nice to be able to take myself and 3.5 other people around in a decent level of relative comfort.

Haha how does one haul half a person?

In regards to the money look at the whole picture. It's a $1,000 difference now but the payments already made, tags bought, taxes paid, down payment, etc are still factors.

That being said, it doesn't mean it's the wrong choice. I've been in similar situations and found it worth the premium. Just depends on your needs and financial abilities.

Either way, you own a kick ass truck so you win no matter what!

I think the half a person is a reference to the half seat in the rear center; it's very short to make room for cupholders on the floor.
It sounds worth it to me; the 8spd is the only 13+ feature that woud ever tempt me out of my '12.

Bingo! 3 wide in the front or the rear sucks.

The 8 speed really kicks ass. I think it depends on how you like to drive. If you like to blow away rice burners like I do, then go for it. If not, maybe keep what you've got! The 6 spd seemed super sluggish I think.

I think he's losing more than that. He is losing the $1,000 plus whatever he paid as a downpayment (possibly only $0, I guess).

Well here's how it all is, since I'm trading in I only pay tax on the difference so I'm not paying tax 2 times. My down payment went toward the neg equity on my trade in. And since I've made 4 payments =about 1700 which pays my tax. My down payment was 2 k but that went towards the neg equity of my last car. So by my payments toward the truck were for tax so if I'm able to bargain a little more and poss get another 500-1000 it ends up making me a little back actually out the door I was at 32800 and that was with 1600 in tax 3000 in neg equity and roughly 400 title/license etc
2000 down I was at 30800
I'm at 29500 now my latest offer was 28500 which I got the truck at 27575

At the end of my loan I'll spend another 3 k my payments are 460 if I go with a slt they would go up to like 530-40
If I go crew cab express they would be like 490

uh, yes. That's some real fuzzy math there.

Either way, even if you pay cash, cars depreciate. So you're always losing money. If it's what you want and the deal doesn't screw you to bad and is within reason, I'd continue to move forward. The crew cab is nice.

I don't normally finance things, but 0% APR, hell why not leverage someone else's money? Even I might go look at the dealership.

Best of luck with your soon to be purchase.
