When doing your own oil changes would it be a good idea to keep a logbook with oil/filter receipts, mileage intervals, etc.

I was just wondering if ever there was a problem with warranty would this info be enough to prove you had properly maintained your vehicle?

I guess I'd just rather be safe than sorry.

Any thoughts?

If you have the patience for that sort of thing, it is a great idea. Not only for warrantee enforcement, but for resale. Gives you a great thing to show when someone wants to haggle your asking price. Who wouldn't want to get maintenance records when buying a used truck?

If you just keep a log book and write in the mileage and dates of all your service/repairs it is probably enough. Reciepts probably not necessary as many DIY's buy bulk consumption items in advance anyway. Even the IRS accepts logs like that for mileage deductions.

exactly. keeping records is the best way to back up your side if something goes wrong.
and like NYC says- who wouldn't want a truck like that.

also- doing this keeps you looking at the whole truck, keeping your eyes on things like the steering, brakes, tires, etc.

I never thought about the resale factor, but that makes a good point. Maybe I'll keep a detailed log on everything done to the truck, including mods, mileage, etc.

Thanks guys.

I write down the mileage at every oil change and keep the oil sample reports if I do that every once in a while.
Gas receipt at every stop also.

Would be really nice if Ram would do something similar to Subaru. We have a website where we can input all data into a log. For instance, any services we perform on our own, oil changes, fuel consumption, etc. can be uploaded and it's stored by VIN. In the event we sell the Legacy, the report can be printed out directly from the website, and the new owner can continue where we left off.

You could just do this on your own with any spreadsheet software like MS Excel. The advantage to the handwritten log is that it is harder to fabricate at a later date. Different pens, no pages ripped out, etc.

There's an app for that!

I have an app called "Car Minder"
It keeps track of gas, mileage, repairs, and service. It works well, but occasionally I skip entering the gas gallons and mileage at the time I fill up. When I do that, I have to go back and edit it.

I have a little notebook like one you could put in pocket I put all maintenance in it. It includes every fluid change, tire purchases, rotations and oil changes with date mileage, oil used and filter used. I like it makes it nice to go back and see trends and just know I did keep it up.

If you are keeping your receipts, you need to scan them. Most receipts are printed on thermal paper and the "ink" will fade after a year or two. You'll be left with blank paper.

Also, I think moparownerconnect.com has a place where you can log service online. That history will be transferred when you sell the truck.

I cna add my own service records to this website. Dealer services are reported too and it even transfers with Owners. (well at least all service work prior to me buying my truck is on there)

I keep a coil-back logbook of everything I do to the truck except filling with gas.
I just realized the other day I've done this for my car for 13 years, and am not sure whether I want to bother as the only place that will buy it is the Kidney foundation (tax receipt) haha
Seriously, it's come in handy so I can go back and tell how long and for how many Km's I've had a part installed, if it fails (again).

Nice, that mopar online will come in handy. I'll probably still keep paper receipts, transactions, etc, as well, just for the hell of it. Good call on the disappearing ink on receipts. Fortunately, I have a decent scanner/copier/printer.

Nothing wrong with keeping them. Just know the ink will disappear, especially if you keep them in the truck.

You might be able to use a scanner app on your phone.

My best friend was a DIY oil changer when he had 6.0 Ford. He bought an extended warranty and at 123000 ish miles his head gasket blew. Extended warranty company wanted to see service records. He couldn't produce any other than saying I do it all myself. The extended warranty company said do the head gasket job yourself. $1500 wasted on a warranty.

Just keep that in mind when you are DIY'ing it. When it comes to warranty wether it's factory or aftermarket it all boils down to is finding a way not to pay!
