I have been debating getting a radar detector. before i got my dodge i had gotten a couple tickets... neither one was really speeding... one was in a speed trap and the second was not stopping for 3 full seconds at a stop sign..

do police even use radar now or is it all laser? what is your experience with this topic?

It's all dependent on where your at. Where I call home only a few of the State boys run laser. The radar detector will protect you from the local yokels and the county mounties just fine. If you live in a more populated region I would imagine there are more Laser cops around. Just my $.02

Here in Virginia you are up against both radar and lazer. Detectors are illegal to own in Virgina, as well as illegal to use even if they are legal in your home state.

Passport 9500, it's built in to the truck and has a signal scrambler to give cops an error code. Pricey though

Had my passport escort 8500 for going on 7 years... literally never had a problem with it.

Works awesome, never had a ticket, and it mounts with the blendmount under the mirror. I have it wired into the mirror plug so it comes in as soon as I turn the truck on, and off when it's off.

I've always had a hard time accepting the fact that we can legally be monitored (radar/laser), but we are not legally allowed to know!
WTF?

I live in new mexico USA i have found that they are perfectly legal in my state but have not found out what the police are using. I'm sure its a combination of both.. i have heard through that a radar detector even if it detects radar that the radar is too fast and you don't have time to slow down..

i would think in town they would use radar but idk...

I was looking into the cobras... does anyone know anything about them? this is one model i seen Cobra ors 9470

Cobra XRS 9470 High Performance Digital Radar/Laser Detector with Voice Alert - Cobra - Car Toys

They are legal here in Alberta. I know most provinces they are illegal to use.

im seriously contemplating getting one as well. just got a ticket 3 weeks ago on the major highway. he got me at 82, I saw him outside his patrol car, lasering people, and of course didnt have time to slow down. lol

I wonder how well these actually work, and how much of a warning do they give you? if they can use em on us, damn right ima have some sort of device that tells me where they are. dont care if there legal or not here in cali.

First off, to be clear there are 2 types of threats: radar and laser. A radar detector is going to save you in most cases from police using radar. A radar detector will pick up laser signals as well, but lasers work by line of sight so 9/10 times if your detector goes off with a laser warning it's too late. It seems like there is also a 3rd threat that uses newer technology as well, but I can't recall what that is. It's not widely used like radar and laser though. Typically most local police use radar, unless they are using speed traps. Highway patrol can vary.

I have a Passport 8500, hardwired in. Yes it's always on when I'm driving my truck, but you still have to be smart driving. I've only found myself with 1 speeding ticket, and that was in a speed trap, and they were using laser. Hard to talk your way out of going 11 over.

To defend against lasers, there is something called laser shifters. Escort makes it and combined with an Escort radar detector, they had some deal going that if you got a ticket with this combo, they would pay it. I don't know if they still offer that (I doubt it), but that's how confident they were that the combo of their radar detector + laser shifters would work.

https://www.escortradar.com/store/laser-shifter-zr4.html

I'd recommend an Escort detector, either the 8500, 9500 or the new Max. If I was in the market today, I know I'd spring for the Max. Few to no false signals with a wider range than the 8500. But as long as mine is good, I'll keep with it.

If you go cheap on a radar detector, don't expect it to do much for you.

Radar detectors only work if #1 the cop has his radar on full time and is not feathering the trigger. If he is then #2 if someone is in front of you and he hits them first.

A cop sitting behind a building waiting for you to drive by and then he clocks you.... if you're spending you're toast!

K40 runs a similar program with their detectors.... if you get a ticket they pay it.

I personally run the $40 Walmart Cobra and have for years. No complaints and most importantly.... no tickets!

If I get pulled there is more to worry bout on my truck then that if they know what they are looking for. When I get pulled the windows go down and the truck is shut off asap and pray they dont look under it.
