I currently have a 2005 2500 diesel with 225K miles on it. It has been a good truck but hard to justify the extra expense for a diesel just to drive down the road, thinking of a 1500 Hemi.

What kind of MPG are you seeing?
How many miles should the truck be goo for 200-300k?
Any typical wear issues, ball joints......?

Thanks

the engine should easily see 300000 miles. ball joints were the problem spot on my 04. if you have serviced the truck regularly, i wouldnt get rid of it. my 11 rcsb sport 4x4 gets about 16mpg around a rural area, hwy 18 to 20 mpg depending on how i drive.

the question is, do you want to buy a new(er) one?
the engine is bullet proof if you take care of it. Oil changes are the key.
other than that- the 8-speed can get around 20-21mpg on highway, city still 16-18- I'm on the higher side- because I'm older and drive a little more relaxed.
other than that- not much- and absolutely not as much as the F150.

I bought a New(er) one. 2012 with 65k miles, in very good shape with 18" Vtec off road rims and brand new 35x12.5" Antarres Deep Digger MT's for 23k. I really like not having a new truck payment and the truck feels new due to the shape it is in and being only a couple few years old. Also the on/off on the cruise control as well as accel/coast button lettering is worn a little so I expect based on that, avg of 20k plus miles a year for first owner he did a lot of highway. I have been under this truck numerous times from suspension to motor and not a single leak on it or any warning signs. Only wetness is the drip on the control arm I think it is from oil changes/filter removal.

At first with the big tires I was getting 12.5 but after my latest round of performance mods its looking like 14+ but time will tell. I also got the full synthetic oil change/tire rotation every three months and plan to maintain this truck like it's my own child :)

If anything were to happen you can get a brand new OEM 5.7 Hemi ready to drop in for $4995.

I would say look around, keep your eye out at your local dealerships, watch inventory and get a contact at a few of them and tell them to call if they get a lightly used Ram Hemi in. Or buy new if you want :) I was looking at a Silverado before but my mechanic and I found rust issues and discovered it was from Alberta aka salt city. I was going to buy it probably but went back to dealership and told them wasn't happy about the rust. They scrambled to check the other 3 Silverados but all came from Alberta...Then they took me around back to the Ram yet to hit the lot that I bought, kinda pulled their Ace out of the hole to get a sale. Same exact price as the Silverado which was a 2009 vs the 2012 Ram, some of the pricing was to make the sell. But the Ram had so much more and looked so much nicer, not just the big tires but the paint, condition, interior. I really wasn't far at all into looking at trucks but I was happy and kind of became a Dodge guy overnight. IMO it seems you get much more for your money on these Rams.

Some of my friends and family gave me a hard time for not getting a Cummins and made fun of my "gasser" but I explained how actually it is perfect for me. I will pull a dinky trailer maybe once a year, won't ruin it in the mud but will take it out here and there and up in the snow. But really its just a fun part time daily driver so the reduced cost of no diesel and heavy duty is nice. I mean for me to get the same truck with a CTD with comparable miles would have been how much more? 7-8 grand? I don't know but you see were I am going.

Keep it!!

2005.... I would keep it as most people looking for a really reliable CTD, are wanting a pre-2007.5 with the 5.9! the combo you have should last you quite a bit longer!! Heck...if mine was a 5.9 I would never get rid of it!! just my $.02

The truck runs and looks great, but all good things must come to the end. Just starting to think about it so when the time comes I am ready.
