I am a first time poster here, having just bought a brand new 2019 RAM Classic. I am aware of the break in procedure in the owners manual. My question is, does a new RAM have a break in oil from the factory? I ask because I am at about 800 miles now, and I am considering dumping the factory fill to get rid of any metal break in particles in the oil. If it has a special break in oil though, I will leave it in for 5K. Its a 3.6L Pentastar. Thanks.

Been discussed a few times. The general consensus is the tracks come with Pennzoil yellow bottle from the factory. Imho, you can easily go 3000 miles on the factory fill.

Congrats on the new truck.

no, they don't use a break in oil. you can change at the normal interval, or early, your choice. i changed my first early, mainly because most of my mileage was stop and go traffic.

Thank you both. I will do a first change at 1000, then 4000 miles later at 5000, and even 5000 mile intervals after that.

i did my first at 2000 miles..number was kind of random. it was that or wait until i got back from a 1100 mile trip. plus my mileage is largely stop and go. i'll be in a regular schedule now. i expect i will probably do every 6 months whether it needs it or not. i figure 2 oil changes a year versus 1 is not a biggie at 88 bucks canadian a pop at the dealer. if i went with the dealer recommended frequency that is 5000 miles. i probably will put on about 6000 miles a year for forseeable future. i figure with all this talk of cams, lifters and oil condition 88 bucks a year is a worthy preventative measure if it helps.

So I hit the 1000 mile mark, and changed the oil. Thinking Pennzoil 5w-20 was filled original from the factory, I went back with that. Next change at 5K, then 10K, and so on.

i am going to ask the dealer next time if they have a full synth 5-20 option. (will be more money of course). just to see what they say. i believe the stock mopar oil at the price (about 5 a quart canadian) is dino oil. i won't bother with a semi synth option as you don't know how much is synthetic. its usually just enough to call it semi synth and nothing more. for motorbikes a lot of guys mix their own semi synth oil so they get a true solid 30/70 to 50/50 mix of synth to diesel. if i recall correctly factory mixed semi synths tend to be only about 5 to 15% synth to diesel.
