How many of you guys have a driveshaft loop? I'm thinking about adding one before running drag radials at the track. After seeing a few people have failures I figure it's a pretty cheap piece of insurance. If you've got one, I'd be interested in seeing a pic.

Well I spent most of the day today with a friend working on a loop. I love my 32 gal. gas tank for daily driving but it sure made the loop a pain. We ended up making it 3 pieces so it all bolts in without any welding on the truck. I even used existing holes in the frame rails so no drilling either.

Once I get it painted I'll post a couple pictures of it on the truck.

Looks great. Do you have a 6sp or 8sp? Regular cab or 4 door?

The issue is only related to the regular cab 8sp trucks, but what concerns me about a loop is that the driveshaft fails in the middle and the joint, not at the front or back when it bolts to the transmission or axle.

I almost feel that if you are wanting to protect the truck, you need to have 2 loops, 1 for the front and 1 for the rear section of the driveshaft.

I will not only be contacting DSS tomorrow to have them make an upgraded driveshaft for us, but will be looking into a dual loop setup as well.

Thanks, I actually didn't see your latest post before I posted this, sucks about loosing yours on the 1st pass...

Thankfully I'm running a 4x4 crew cab so I've got a single piece steel ds. It's an 8 speed.

I would agree that it would be smart to add a rear loop. There is a nice factory crossmember back there that should make it pretty easy, I'm sure I'll end up adding one at some point.

Guess on a 6 speed ccsb 4x4 would be a good investment?

The 5/6sp trucks and 4 door 8sp trucks have not had any issues with the driveshafts failing. Its never a bad thing to have a driveshaft loop installed, but I dont feel it is necessary either unless you are running your truck very hard at the track on slicks all the time, or are in an 8sp regular cab.

Its not pretty bu bar you thought about a sleeved loop instead of just a bent pipe loop? Something like this

There is also something like this... I have built similar units for stationaty applications on pump motors and gear heads

Got it painted and installed. Only thing I may do different is plate the outside of the frame rails similar to how I did the inside rather than use the washers. The frame had some deflection as the bolts were tightened up.

There's probably a small market for a custom built bolt in loop,if you decide to make a few more.
It looks good.

With the failure rate of driveshafts I'd say there's more than a small market. That looks like a sweet piece. If you could make a bunch and sell them, you could be on to something. Sell them through Moe's :)
