im looking to do a projector retrofit on a set of dual headlights. ive never done a retrofit before so this is new to me. ive opened up headlights before, and ive read a few DIY's on installing the projectors. im pretty confident i should have no problem with it. ive been reading a lot on different projectors, and im leaning towards the morimoto mini's for ease of installation and they seem to be a good projector at a great price. i do a have a few questions though.

1) Morimoto mini H1 vs mini D2S. i realize that its a different bulb, but is there any reason i should go with one over the other? or just preference? fwiw, i have HID ballasts from my last car that im leaning towards using (in 3 years they never gave me a single issue). it was an h11 set up but i plan on buying new bulbs anyway since i want to go with 5000k instead of the 6000k that i used to have.

2) is there another projector i should look at thats close in price and ease of installation?

3) what shrouds should i go with? dual headlights have a lot of room in them. i dont want something too small where its looks out of place. i see a few options out there. im not really sure what works and what doesnt.

i appreciate any input or tips you guys may have. if you have pictures, even better. ive seen a few pics but most dont go into detail with what projectors they used and what shrouds, etc. thanks.

Go with the Morimoto MH1. The D2S is just no where near as good a projector.
While I like that it takes a real D2S HID bulb, not a re-base, it just... sucks.

I've used both.

I ran the Apollo shrouds in my first retro, they only needed some minor trimming to fit, and looked (IMO) great.

This is the Apollo in a dual housing, all chrome (pardon the reflector bowl is dusty and appears white):

And here's how they ended up. I painted the trim piece and the shroud with Metallic Textured paint:

They looked solid blacked out almost all the time:

They looked pretty badass IMO.

yours pretty much how i was planning on doing mine. leave the bowl chrome and remove the turn signal reflector. only difference is i think im going to go with regular satin or gloss black and im going to leave the shroud chrome as well. my truck is mineral grey btw.

what kind of trimming did you have to do on the shroud? i really like the way those look.

That does look badass WhiteExpress! I think that's close to the direction I want to go. Probably a flat or satin black though.

Thanks for the kind words. Not bad for my first complete retro.

I just had to trim about a 1/4" wide piece from the shroud with a dremel to allow it to not hit the headlight bezel.

I though about using flat black paint, but I wanted it to be more 'interesting'.
I think the new truck will be getting satin white.

see in bold:

H1, hands down. For now. New D2S projectors coming soon.....might tip the scale!

2) is there another projector i should look at thats close in price and ease of installation? nope

3) what shrouds should i go with? dual headlights have a lot of room in them. i dont want something too small where its looks out of place. i see a few options out there. im not really sure what works and what doesnt. I've done MC-R, Apollo, Gatling 2.0, Orbit in the duals. Not sure where all my pics are, but I think the best was the Orbit. LOVE that shroud.

i appreciate any input or tips you guys may have. if you have pictures, even better. ive seen a few pics but most dont go into detail with what projectors they used and what shrouds, etc. thanks. Get ready to cut a bit. Not a lot......but with v6.0 of the MH1 they have 4mm less threads. Gotta cut a bit of the H13 front mounting flange to get that to fit.

Let me know when you are ready for parts. ;) I stock all the stuff, at a better rate than my supplier (TRS) has on their site.

They looked pretty badass IMO.

They where, kinda miss those on my truck! :D

you've got my business. i think this is going to be something i tackle once its gets colder out. dont really have the time at the moment. probably around thanksgiving.

as far a shrouds go...i don't like the mc-r's. gatling 2.0's i think might be on the small side for the dual headlights, imo. not sure yet. the apollo's are definetly a contender. ive seen the orbit's in the third gen lights. love them. i dont think ive seen them in the 4th gens. definetly a contender also. would love to see some pic's if you or anyone else has them. are they a direct drop in or do they require modification?

whats the biggest difference from the v5.0's and the v6.0's? im guessing i should go with the v6.0's?

As far as 5.0 vs 6.0? A LOT

5.0 they had a foreground limiter. Removed in 6. 6 has a totally different rear bowl, wider beam - new solenoid for less issues. all around, the 6 is much better.

I'm considering taking apart my lights to swap up to the 6s. :fish_h4h:
