E Rated Tires

I have decided to upgrade my 14 Ram 1500 to E Rated tires to see if it will help my towing experience. I am trying to decide between the Firestone Destination XT and the Cooper Discoverer AT3 XLT. Anybody have experience with either of these? Any other E Rated tire to consider? Thanks

Put the Cooper's on mine last August. Stiffened the ride up a bit and feel more confident towing. I love mine so far 7k miles into them. Grip wise they have done great in all weather conditions (MN, so dry, wet , snow, ice, mud). I love the look of the XLTs as well 100% would buy again next time I need a set.

Look at XL rated tires. I ran them on my 1500 and they worked good.

Load Range E tires will absolutely help with the squirly feeling when towing.
They also will absolutely help you feel a whole lot more of the imperfections in the road.

I think an XL rated tire might be a happy mid-ground for the occasional tow vehicle.

I have Nitto terra grappler G2 E rated tire on my 1500. It’s a all terrain tire that gets good traction in the snow and off road. Plus you’ll get 70k+ miles out of them!

E rated may be overkill for a 1/2 ton. For maximum benefit you need 80psi max which the rims likely aren't rated for. A good D rated is usually 2500#/tire or so and would be a good step up from what you have.

IMO, the wheel size will affect towing handle more than the tire load. For ex. I had LT285-70-17 E-load Michelin Defenders on 17X7" wheels.
They didn't hold a candle to my XL-load rated General Grabber HTS-60 P275/60/20 on 20x9" wheels.

The 20" setup is far superior to the the 17" setup I had. Granted the 17x7" is just too narrow of a wheel for a 285/70/17 IMO and the 20x9" is a wide wheel for the 275/60/20.
Wider wheel (to eliminate sidewall squirm) + shorter sidewall = superior handling.

I put Firestone transforce Es on a 2000 ford expedition Eddie bauer's and it helped towing a lot.

They are heavy tires though so be prepared for a fuel mileage hit. Yes you will feel more road imperfections, but that didn't bother me, personally. I aired mine up to 70 psi when towing and 80 a few times with no issues with no I'll effects.

If you two a lot they are a worthwhile upgrade.

If you like your truck to feel like your driving a 70s Cadillac as 1/2 tons come from the factory, you might not like E tires. If you expect a truck to ride and feel like a truck, then they likely won't bother you.

i run nitto f rated ridge grapplers on my slt when i have the camper on and towing the boat.best tires for heavy loads so far.when the camper is off it's general grabber at2's.also good for heavy work.

Those Firestone are junk. Had to replace after 27k miles. They came stock on my 17 2500. I rotated every time I did oil changes (every 5000 mi). Don't waste your money. I have no experience with the Coopers.
I had very good performance with BF Goodrich Mud Terrains. Of course, I've run M/T tires on all my trucks over the last 30 yrs or so.
Your trailering will be much less white knuckle with E rated tires.

I have E rated Firestone Destination AT's. I like them and have had them on several vehicles.

The E rated tires did improve my towing stability.
