This is long winded. Numbers are based on my region, and my choices of maintenance, oil/filter used. I will say this a few times. Yours will most likely be different, and possibly much different. DO NOT expect my numbers to be the same as yours or buy a vehicle without researching your regions and needs/wants!

I now have 10,000 miles (16,000km) on my 16' EcoDiesel purchased new in July. Price breakdown will vary greatly by region, use, personal choices.

I live in northern Ontario. Mostly highway use with speed limits of 50-60 mp/h (80-100 km/h) I generally travel at 9.3 mp/h (15 km/h) faster then posted speed limit which is generally the speed police won't bother a person up here. I'd say more then 35% of my miles have been "loaded" or trailering miles.

Truck is all stock except cooper AT/W tires in factory size. 3.55gears 4x4 QC. I'm coming from a Silverado that was stock except for cooper AT/3 in factory size. 3.73gears 4x4 extended cab.

Gas prices are roughly $3.79 gal (1$/litre). Diesel is $3.41 gal (90cents/litre). When I purchased the truck, and ran the numbers to justify the EcoDiesel premium. It's been going up, but maintaining a 10cent/litre difference between gas and diesel fuel.

EcoDiesel mileage is tracked on fuelly. I have averaged 27 mpg (8.7l/100km) summer. 25.3mpg (9.3l/100km)winter fuel. Let's call it 50/50 split summer/winter up here at 26mpg average. My Silverado for comparison averaged just over 15mpg (15.3l/100km) under same use and conditions. I've never owned a hemi to compare. My two work hemi's drank more fuel, but that's under different conditions and use. Fuelly numbers for hemi's seem to be very similar to my Silverado. I know somebody will come on and claim 30mpg "averages" with a hemi...

Things get a little bit personal choice here with oil/filter selection and this can vary greatly by personal choices and regions.

Oil capacity EcoDiesel 10.5 quarts (9.46litres). Hemi is 7quarts (6.6litres). I used synthetic oil in my silverado (8 quarts) although not required by manufacture. I use Rotella t6 in my EcoDiesel. I purchase 5gal (18.9litre) for $100. $53.50 cost per oil change with the extra litre bottle purchased at $7.

I only run oem filters. $53 for EcoDiesel oil filters. 10,000 mile (16,000km)interval. Did oil change interval on Silverado at 7,500 miles (12,000km). Correct me if I'm wrong but hemi is 8,000miles (13,000km). No idea what mopar hemi filter costs. They were $25 on Silverado.

In 10,000 miles (16,000km) I've used 3/4 tank of def. Tank is 8gal (30litres). So 5.95 gal (22.5litres) used. Local cost is $2.83/gal (75 cents/litre). $16.785 total.

Mopar fuel filter $30. 30,000mile (48,000km) interval. $10cost per 10,000 miles(16,000km).

EcoDiesel. Oil $53.50, filter $50, def $16.785, fuel filter $10. Total $130.285. Fuel costs $1296. Grand total $1,426. This is over 10,000 miles (16,000km)

Silverado. Fuel costs over 10,000 miles (16,000km) were $2,496 alone. Now using synthetic oil at $45, $25 filter and factoring in the 7,500mi interval to 10,000 miles MY costs were $78. Total $2,574.

$1,148 difference BASED ON JULY FUEL PRICE. The $3,000 EcoDiesel option would pay itself with these numbers in under 30,000miles (50,000km) which is less then Canadian bumper to bumper warranty, or less then half Canadian power train warranty.

I fully expect oil prices to increase EDIT: fuel for oil (they have by 10%) since purchasing the truck. I expect another 5-10% increase over winter. I think it's also a safe bet to say oil prices will continue to increase, and fuel, back to $1.50/litre gas or $1.40/litre diesel AT SOME POINT while I still own the EcoDiesel (next 3-4 years??)like they were 2 years ago.

When/if that happens fuel prices jump to $2,016 per 10,000miles for EcoDiesel. $3,672 per 10,000miles for my 13'Silverado

Good information here. Thanks for sharing all of your number crunching. The only thing gets me with diesels is the cost of replacement parts. Hopefully your stay trouble free and the resale is going to be higher so if it pays for it's self in side the warranty it's win win.

Great post, you've got me thinking now. I'll probably be doing between 30,000-40,000 kms per year so this would be a win for me, I think

Nice fairly complete numbers, for the best of luck conditions. I don't see DEF in those numbers, but probably in the noise. Over the years I've found one can manipulate the cost number to reach any conclusion you want, so buy the diesel if you need or want it. They make a lot of sense for truck type usage.

When I purchased my first diesel, fuel was much less than gas even with the winter fuel premium. Enjoyed that for a year until the difference was reversed and ate up any benefit. Lately the prices reversed again but not that much of a difference.

Whats missing is the cost risk avoidance or cost of repair risk. I found that there are several scenarios where a relatively minor gas engine issue is a financial disaster on a diesel (think fuel gelling, or injector leak washing lube from cylinder). When I got closer to 100,000 miles I found myself worrying more and more about the potential costly repairs. So say you are unlucky and had to replace an injector or and engine at 100,000 miles, how does that affect the comparison? On the average nothing will happen, but it can happen and will happen, so there is some financial risk factor. If you own a fleet, one can amortize over several trucks, you won't be unlucky with all of them. But not so much if you only have one.

Not saying that the diesel is not right for you and the best option, but its a need or want thing not a financial thing. If you pull heavy routinely, you just have to pay the price for capable equipment. Those fuel numbers will reverse next year, and when the emissions system clogs up on you at 100,000 miles... scary $$$ to worry about :)

Nice comparison! I've been thinking about switching to a 2500 diesel, because it looks like gas prices are steadily increasing. There's not that much fluctuation in diesel prices.

Long term diesel repair costs was considered. To be honest I wouldn't keep a emission equipped diesel past warranty. The options I considered was purchase extended warranty at time of purchase and roll it into financing. Trade vehicle after 60,000mile/100,000km powertrain warranty if I have any issues during this period of ownership(FYI most emissions equipment is warranted longer-required by EPA). If I don't have any issues during 60,000mi/100,000km purchase extended warranty at this time and continue driving. Finally, fully delete emissions, purchase a "after market" powertrain warranty after factory warranty, continue driving. I didn't go with option 1 because,

I'm not a brand loyal, this is what I must have type of guy. I expect any vehicle of any make could be problem free, or a lemon, and have no hesitations getting rid of it if problems arise. I purchased my vehicle for asking price on 2014 ecodiesels in my region, so I suspect I should be able to get out of it pretty cleanly if required.

Edit to add. Today driving by a gas station I notice gas has rised to $1.14/litre. It's already higher then I expected winter price to be.

Very good food for thought. In my area diesel is more than gas, but I would have to consider it after driving one vs my old hemi.

Unless you need to tow more than 7000lbs. I would have jumped in a second if they put the 10k on the Eco.

I really wish I had given the eco a chance when I purchased. I drive 20-25k miles a year and the better mpg would have been nice

I'm in Northern Ontario also and have a 2016 with the 5.7...I'm averaging 30,000 km annually and pull a 30 ft tt most of the summer. I'm kinda kicking myself for not going with the ED.
