So, I’m looking at double dins to upgrade from my 5.0 but I’m not terribly knowledgeable on CarPlay. Is it voice controlled only? Meaning you can’t type in a destination on maps etc.? I don’t do Bluetooth calling, I don’t like Siri so I’m wondering if I even need to worry about a unit with CarPlay. Thanks for the info.

It’s nice in the 2018 because if you use Pandora, everything is mirrored on the screen. The old 8.4A and 8.4AN did that wirelessly through the Uconnect Access app, but the connection was wildly unreliable and slow to connect. The CarPlay is much faster since it’s a wired connection, and bonus points for charging your phone at the same time. You likely won’t use much else since you don’t use Siri. I don’t like Apple maps so I can’t tell you how that part works.

Really the maps for nav is my only real draw to it. The phone functioning as an iPod with my music would be nice. I don’t do pandora or Spotify or any of that.

For me, I use Sirius for radio, flash or phone for audio, and that’s it. If I could add an indash nav through CarPlay without paying for an in dash nav head unit, then that’d be nice. But I don’t do any of the Bluetooth calls or voice features. I’m too old school for that.

I guess you could just pull over, open up your Apple maps app, type in where you want to go, and it’ll pop up on your radio. But why go through all that, when all you have to do while you’re driving, is say “hey Siri- directions to ‘wherever you want to go’ “, and she pulls it up for you onto your radio

I’ve got Apple Car Play in my Jeep and I can say Maps sucks. Only sometimes will it find the address by voice. Very frustrating

I opted for the 2018 for native apple car play and android auto. My day is usually 3 hours in the truck commuting and on conference calls a fair amount of that time. Nice to have waze or Google maps for traffic redirection too.

When I'm not on the phone I'll try to get up to date on my podcasts or listen to a training session for work. It's all about making the best of the windshield time for me. What I can do while driving I dont have to do in the evening.

Only had the truck for 1 week yesterday. Loving it minus the fuel consumption compared to my diesel 35d BMW. Smiles per gallon as my buddies say.

We can, but the map won’t be mirrored on the radio screen. The turn by turn directions will play through the speakers, though. I prefer Apple maps over google, anyway.

I don't use it because I have navigation on both my vehicles, but I will give apple credit. Their maps app has gotten better than the **** show it was when they first introduced it.

that is apple....always has been that way and probably always will. Having used both car play and android auto I feel that car play is the better of the two systems, but l'm not using it for maps so I can see how that would be a sticking point for some.

They only allow apps that have created an interface to work with CarPlay. It does not suck by any means, and you reasoning is a limitation more so developers than Apple.

i totally know and understand this is an apple issue itself, but i would expect apple and FCA to be in a place where the end user can benefit the most....wait, im dreaming.

apple car play only working while plugged in is also a sub par setup...should be a wireless interface in 2018

your realize that android auto also only works by plugging it in(except for streaming music over bluetooth connection) on the oem radio

I don't think wireless carplay is out for ANY manufacturer. I know Alpine offers it aftermarket.

I think Alpine is the only wireless option right now. I believe Android Auto has a couple wireless options from aftermarket.

Android is wireless on the new Kenwood flagship head units. I noticed it when I was researching them recently.

It’s takes two seconds for you to plug your iPhone in if you wanna use CarPlay. Use either Apple maps and you can use Waze too.

I have the alpine with wireless CarPlay, and waze won’t mirror on the radio screen. Is there something different with the factory radios with CarPlay?
