Electric Power Steering FIXED- READ FOR SOLUTION

I have a 2016 ram 1500 with electric power steering. 3 Mechanics quoted me at $3000+ to replace the whole rack… Didn’t do it. Theres a belt inside of the rack, it was snapped in half. None of the mechanics I talked to knew there was a belt inside this thing. The belt is only 50$. Please check your belt before replacing the whole rack unless you want to chop up atleast a thousand $$$.

Found another guy on facebook who was quoted several thousand to fix his rack,and i told him to check the $50 belt out,and that's turned out to also be his problem.He says he'll make a video of replacing it when he gets the belt,hopefully he also posts it here,as i sent him a link to this thread.

What a joke.

I changed my power steering fluid once a year. Happy to do it seeing this. Ill take a pump and hydro steering any day.

Just closing loop on my experience with replaceing my EPS. I tried replacing the eps drive belt first. This did not fix my issue. That was faily easy to do but wound up just being a waste of about $50 and 5 hours of my time. Next step was to find a replacement EPS Rack and Pinon. If you searched for one you know there are no cheap ones to be had. Found one at Buy Auto Parts, very expensive, but a lifetime warranty. Took about 3 hours to switch out. Return the core for a refund. No need to get the computer flashed unless you get a code MIL light. No way to know...just depends on the year and make of the replacement eps. Mine worked great. You do need to get a new front end alignment because you remove the tierod ends. Mine worked great just sucks due to the cost. Water in the eps due to a bad boot clamp caused my failure . tks.

According to the mechanic, this is the error code he got.. C2217-00. Any idea if this is just the belt or something like the motor failure; which he suspects it is.

Old thread but, ...Probably water-logged box where the controller sits. Or water in somewhere. Pretty commonly reported by other Ram owners. Tons of posts on EPS issues...

The motor had failed. We got a unit from a salvage yard.

I don't suppose he tried removing the motor did he? I'm guessing it's probably replacable if a guy went looking for a replacement motor,as it's probably available from somewhere

He did, however over here in Dubai, its hard to find shop that could have repaired the motor. So he went to the salvage yard and got a replacement, which saved on time.

I don't suppose you got a pic of the motor and the numbers off it,by chance.

Moisture probably isn't an issue in Dubai, I'm guessing...

Your post points out there can be several areas to inspect for EPS failure: Poor electrical contacts, Module failure, Water, Belt, Motor, Mechanical.

Out of curiousity, any idea what the root-cause of the motor failure could have been? Moisture, Shaft bearing, Windings, Oil-soaked?

Did the motor area look pretty clean?

Did you have to you a special tool to change it?
