I've got a 98 1500 Laramie with the 5.2L. Last winter it suddenly started misfiring and backfiring when accelerating. The issue got worse until it was barely drivable. (Note, this is not my daily driver. It's just used for runs to the lumberyard, garden center, etc.) I changed the plugs, wires, coil, distributor cap, rotor, and crank position sensor. That fixed 90% of the problem. Now I can drive it and sometimes it's normal and sometimes it will bog down when you hit the accelerator. It's not throwing any codes. I took it to a local shop who has had it for a few weeks now. They tried a new distributor and said it is not popping (backfiring?) anymore, but still bogs sometimes when accelerating. They did a smoke test to check for an intake leak, but didn't find anything. They've looked over my work when I first took it in. I couldn't run the plug wires per the TSB because the new ones weren't long enough. I tried to separate the wires as best I could. Shop mentioned today that the crankcase pressure is high. They didn't say whether it was by a little or a lot. I'm not sure if that is related or not.
It sounds like an ignition issue, but it seems we've changed all of the ignition parts.
Could it be a fuel issue? (The fuel pump was changed about 2 years ago.) This evening, I wondered if maybe there is something floating around in the fuel tank. When I try to accelerate it might block the fuel intake. When I let up, the suction lessens (and sloshing fuel) moves it away from the fuel inlet.
I would appreciate any ideas you all have!
