I have a 97 5.2 and the check engine light came on, its says purge valve fault so i did some research and removed the purge solenoid. I read that if you shake the solenoid and a bunch of black granules fall out you need a new solenoid and canister. Well i shook my selenoid out and i had three little black granules come out. Does this mean I need a new selenoid and canister or not? Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks you.

It's been years...I thought it was on the drivers side. Looks like a coffee can. Reading the TSB states left frame rail (divers).

I found it. It is mounted on the frame on the drivers side. Now the trouble is going to be finding a new canister.. Thanks for your help.

So I got my canister and a few other parts I purchased in the mail. I replaced my serpentine belt and thermostat to a 180 degree. As I was putting my air filter housing back on I noticed a cracked and dry rotted line, turns out its the vapor purge hose and that was my problem... Replaced everything else just to be sure but as of now the light hasn't come back on.

Well least it's fixed. Those hoses are good for failing in the winter when they get brittle and crack.
