I just have a cheap catch can and it does work well - though some don't.

I am currently trying 2 cans in series. The one can gets fairly full after towing the boat from Pa to the Fl Keys and back.

Strange system. I'll get pcv tomorrow. And the obvious air filter

Ill grab an air temp sensor too.

Pretty much the same system as most all cars have had since the 70's or whenever a PCV system was mandated by the Feds.

It looks pretty bad. Would carb cleaner do

Electrical contact cleaner would be best, but intake or carb cleaner will work, just don’t go crazy with it. Don’t use anything that could eat away at the plastic.

I've got the pcv ordered. Truck won't really be going anywhere during the holidays.

after I get this fixed on to the next task.
figuring out why my short runner valve is throwing a code. Time to take off the intake manifold and do some digging around.

What year is your truck? Some earlier ones had issues with short wiring harnesses causing connection issues at the runner valve.

They might be better if plumbed in parallel instead of back to back ie: series.Couple Y fittings would do the trick.

I thought of doing parallel but the purpose of series was to make sure if I did get too full in the one, the second one would take the overflow vs. a big gulp of oil down the intake.
In parallel, I guess would work also.
They are 2 different types of cans (internally) and I don't know if one type is more efficient than the other.
I am also curious to see how much oil gets by the first can - another reason I went in series.

In about 3600 miles of towing, the one can would be about 2/3 of the way full - which in reality is just a few ounces. Fully loaded truck and bed with about a 5000 lb or so trailer weight and at 70+ mph for most of the trip. So fairly hard miles.

At 2/3 full, I wasn't sure I wouldn't be sucking some oil when going around bends and/or over bumps.

I have 138k on my 11. It will partially fill the catch can every 3k miles. About 2 oz. I dump it . OCI is 8 k, so I'm dumping 2 times between oil changes.

My hemi gets driven hard every day. I avg about 750 miles a week so OCI are every 2 months.

PCV valve changed every 40k. Truck doesn't use any oil between changes.

Catch can is not a set it and forget it item. Empty it and move on

The thing with them in series is if the first one does fill up,it'll be dumping liquid not vapour into the 2nd can. I also wonder about how much vacumn drop you'll have through the pcv system with them in series,i think with them in parrellel there should be less vacumn drop.

I don't think too much of a drop, they are pretty free flowing.
At least they are easy to replumb if I decide I want to do in parallel instead.
Now you have me thinking, I wonder if they will be more efficient in parallel as it will slow the flow way down and let more drop out. haha

I will see what it does on the next trip, it won't be towing but will be several thousand highway miles fully loaded - if the second can is empty or close to it, I will put in parallel and see how that performs.

I agree. I just don't want to play with a catch can in the middle of vacation - the last thing on my mind is remembering to empty the can, where it is pretty easy when I get home because after such a trip I also usually change the oil and filter.

I don't think this was mentioned in any of these responses, but the original post mentioned the presence of milky residue in one of the hoses. This is usually a sign of a lot of moisture in the oil. That can occur from a failed head gasket (not common on Hemis), an engine not getting up to temperature because of short trip driving, a bad thermostat, or both. That can be exacerbated by extended oil changes.

Best regards,
Dusty

OP said he only drove 15 minutes to work. I can attest that that short a drive will tend to result in excess moisture in the system. It is one reason I switched to a fully synthetic oil change years ago.
