Just finished changing my oil this morning...could they put the filter in a worse spot? That was a major PITA...

I went with Pennzoil Ultra and a Napa Platinum filter.

Did you get at the filter from the front? It doesn't seem that bad to me. It does make kind of a mess though. I just throw a couple of rags on the crossmember or whatever that is there (can't remember and too lazy to go out and look) before I drop the filter.

Everything I have seen pennzoil is horrible
Ive tore down a few LS engines and the carbon build up is ridiculous
It's like someone stained the aluminum brown
Mobil 1 or royal purple has been the best I have found.
I'm not bashing you just saying what I've seen

RF member BURLA has made a science of motor oil. I'm sure he'll drop by soon. :Insane:

I just did mine as well and carried over a trick I learned back when I was at the dealer and it especially applies with the RAM apparently. Cut a piece of cardboard or old oil jug, coolant whatever you have laying around long and wide enough to catch the oil spill when you remove the filter. Put a slight bend in the material so it has a path to follow. Keep new filter handy, lubed and ready to screw on when you drop the old and just spin on the new filter. Keeps the mess off the frame, steering gear (mines a 2013 so it has that big ass motor/box below the filter, not sure about other years) etc. and just pours into your used oil container.

Or you could just buy one of those fancy, bendy oil change mats. Not sure what they're called but I have one of those too.

No offense taken, I appreciate the feedback. I hadn't seen much feedback, good or bad, so I figured I'd try it and see how it performed. I might try royal purple on the next go around. I've read a lot of good things about it as well.

Yeah, I got to it from the front. It wasn't bad to get to, just made a huge mess and there was no easy way to catch the oil. I used some newspaper and funneled it the best that I could and kept the frame mostly clean.

What about resetting the oil life on a 2013 ram? I've tried putting the key on acc and pumping the gas 3 times. Didnt work. Any suggestions????

My 2013 reset that way with no problem.

Make sure you press the gas pedal in three synchronized steps. Dont press it too quickly.
Mine reset at my second try :)

And yea, that oil filter is kinda weird to get too. Mine must have been put on by hulk cause it wouldnt let go for the life of me. I had to get one of those oil clamp deals.

I think the key needs to be in the RUN/ON position (not acc)

I believe you are correct and this was true until Shell bought them and now I have heard much better reviews and also good numbers when sent in to blackstone. I too am still very cautious and doubt I will every use their oil.
