Hello I recently bought a 2005 Dodge Ram 1500 with a 4.7 Magnum currently it has 77K on it and im **** about maintenance. Ive tried searching the forums but i cant find much information about the 4.7...

1st? - Does the 4.7 have 16 spark plugs like the hemis? Or is it just the 8 on the top under the coils? And it looks pretty easy besides the back two... what do you guys think?

2nd? - Their is a slight ticking/Exhaust leak maybe when my truck is cold, i remember reading on here and a technician at my work told me that the exhaust manifold bolts like to come loose...? is their any one of stopping it or just re tighten them every so often?

3rd? - Im getting a squeak kinda noise when i turn my wheel even when the truck isn't moving... almost sounds like the ujoints in the steering shaft? or else someone told me it could be my ball joints are wore out and making noise? Is it common on these trucks for front end parts to wear pretty fast because at 77K i wouldn't think anything would be wore out just yet...?

Thank You guys Im looking forward to your imput!

Welcome to the forum bud, the older 4.7s I believe have 1 spark plug per cyl, 08s and up went to 2 I believe. Far as the exhaust could be a loose bolt that can be tightened but it may have blown the gasket, only way to tell is to try and tighten it up. Last thing thw squeek your talking about have you had someone move the wheel while you listen to pin point it? Its poss its ball joints but those are more of the 06 up 1500s that have those issues with a level.

Hey sorry about the long response I'm new to all these forums and i didn't know how to check if anyone responded. but yeah, i have not looked into the ticking much more. I'm just hoping its not a oil flow problem to the lifters... does anyone else's 4.7s have this tick? I was on you tube and it sounds a lot like the Hemi tick. But I'm leaning towards the exhaust because when it warms up the ticking is 90% gone. I have to open the door and listen closely but I'm thinking that just might be the injectors. Im so lost but i hope its nothing major because this is the kinda dodge I ALWAYS wanted to own.

Thank You Guys.

So today when i was leaving work a tech was walking by my truck (I work at a Toyota dealership) and i asked him what he thought of the noise and he was guessing to him it sounded like piston slap. something about how when the motor is cold the pistons a take more of oval than circle shape which is causing the piston slap and as it warms up the pistons take back their normal circular shape... he said its pretty common and nothing to worry about just run a synthetic/High grade oil and change it regularly.

What do you guys think? Is it a big issue? Should I be worried? Is their anything I can do to solve this? And since you guys are all Dodge guys is it really that common? Anyone else have this issue?

Thanks in advance for the responses because this noise is really starting to get on my nerves and worry me...

i had an 02 durango with the 4.7 and I had the tick. It was a combination if an manifold leak starting on the passenger side and the engine does have a knock/slap till it warms up. I even had synthetic in it and didn't matter. Do you hear the tick on one side or just an overall sound of the motor?

Mine had 105k on it when I sold it and it was still running strong and I tached it out alot

Ya the knock/slap is just a all over sound no particular side its just super loud and some what embarrassing because it sounds like its about to explode!

I'm just debating if this is a reason to get rid of the truck or not because i don't want the motor blowing up or anything because it is my daily driver. and i love the truck and i got a lot of plans for it that I'm ready to do i just don't wanna stick the money into a POS thats ready to die...
