I've got a question! I have a 2014 2500 heavy duty with 6.7 Cummins. While pulling an enclosed trailer the other day cruising at 70mph all of the sudden I get a chime "service four wheel drive" and one hell of a grinding noise from the truck. I immediately pulled over and stop along the free way. I put it in park and got out to investigate. At that point I decided to see if I could get it to the next exit. I put it back in drive and everything was fine?

It did it one other time on the trip. I did the same thing to fix it. Drove it the rest of the way home and hasn't done it since. That's been two months ago but I don't drive it much. But I'm half afraid to take it to far now do to the fact I don't trust it. Thought I'd ask on here before I start the dealer hassle!

Thanks
Kevin

I would say , either it's low or in need of changing.

Grinding noise could be the actuator on your front axle just one possibility anyway.

I think its called and “axle disconnect”

you sure you didnt turn the 4x4 knob by accident ? ive never heard of these trucks enaging 4x4 on its own. honestly i dont know if its even possible. the tcase first has to get the front axle shaft spinning in the proper direction, then a signal is sent to the cad motor which operates the fork

Yea, Ive heard talk of this issue before.

Do you have the knob on the dash for 4wd, or the manual lever in the floor? If the lever, make sure it is fully in 2wd.

Should excerize your 4x4 gears every now and then for all 4x4's. Don't go years without putting it into 4x4, use it from time to time wether its just driving a mile or 2.

So it’s not a manual shifter thing. Anybody else have any ideas?

that has nothing to do with anything. the grinding might have been the collar [which was spinning forward], trying to slide on the passenger half shaft [which was probly spinning backward]. but for that to happen, some kind of electrical malfunction had to give a signal to the cad motor

This happened to me pulling my camper on the interstate today. Didn’t notice any noises. Turned truck off to get fuel and light didn’t come back on. Used 4wd last week. Anyone else have this issue?

My 2014 2500 4x4 (6.4 hemi) would get that same error message, but usually it happened right after I started the truck and put it in gear. It only happened once while I was driving, but I don't recall any grinding noise, and it would always clear when I shut it down and then restarted it. I had the floor handle and not the knob. Not that this helps you much, but who knows....

The "service 4WD" error message has happened to me in a very similar pattern. Never any grinding and not while driving but every once in a while. Probably doesn't help but just letting others know the error message is somewhat common.

As far as the cruise control button not working, simply flick the button with your finger when it isn't working. Sounds silly, but it works for me every time.

I finally got my truck in for an oil change this week. Last week I had to get new tires. Only got 27.5K on the stock tires and they were shot. Got a free alignment and the tech told me I had a loose ball joint and the nut on my draglink was loose.
I told this to the tech when I went for my oil change. They kept my truck and ordered a replacement part for the Drag Link. They are supposed to replace cruise button, and check the ball joint and look for a code on the Service 4wd alarm I got last month.
