Magnum 5.9 360
Hey guys, I have a 2001 Ram 2500 with the Magnum 5.9 360 gasser. It's one of my bosses plow trucks that I've inherited to use, if, I can get it running. This truck literally has a mind of its own and has the most mind boggling issue I've ever come across.

When I first came across it, it wouldnt stay running and the entire time it would sputter and backfire at idle. If you gave it gas it would backfire more then choke out and die. It backfired both from the intake and exhaust. I replaced the breather and PCV valve and it ran good enough to get it to advance auto.

The codes that came on were:

TPS high voltage

&

Intermittent camshaft sensor

I replaced the TPS and at operating temperature it ran like new. I thought I had it fixed so I parked it.

The next time I went to start it it had the same exact issue. Backfiring and missing and you really had to feather the throttle to even get it running.

Well, it sat until last night because we needed to use it. I started it and after feathering the throttle and listening to it backfire over and over it finally got up to operating temperature.

I started down the road with no power at acceleration and still missing and backfiring. Then, about 5 miles down the road, I'll be d*mned if it didnt snap out of it and ran strong with not a single hint of problems all night until I was finished plowing.

I left it running because after resetting the computer and TPS earlier that night the check engine light came back on.

About an hour later I walked outside the shop and the truck had died. I hit the key and WAHLAH back to the missing and backfiring. I took it down to advance auto spitting and sputtering and had them plug it in again.

Again, the two coded I listed before and nothing else. I thought for sure is was an O2 sensor stuck open or closed. But no:

TPS high voltage (with a brand new TPS)

&

Intermittent camshaft position sensort signal

And nothing else. I took it back to the shop and parked it. Well tonight (Happy New Year to me) I walked into the shop and hit the key.

Not a single thing I could to do get the RPMs over 400-500. Hitting the gas kills it.

The only thing I noticed was it wasnt backfiring but maybe once or twice as it died. Then smoke would come out of the filter box and filled up the shop.

If you're still reading then I thank you for your time. I really need help guys, basically, I don't have a job if I don't have this truck. Can anyone help me?

First off, welcome to the forum and I'm sorry to hear you're having hair-pulling issues.

The one thing that stood out to me is that you pulled 2 codes consistently and you didn't replace the Crankshaft Position Sensor (CKPS). Now, I'm not saying it is definitely the issue, but I DO know that the CKPS can do some weird stuff on these trucks, including intermittent backfiring like you describe.

The only other things besides the CKPS and the TPS (which you replaced, with what brand, btw?) are maybe the Camshaft position sensor and the fuel sync in the PCM.

Replace your temp sensor. It can cause many problems as well.

Always start with whatever the check engine light codes come up with. You got the TPS, do the crank sensor. While doing the sensor, disconnect the battery so the computer can reset and clear the codes. Once all that is done, wee what you get and keep us posted.
