I have a 2012 Ram 1500 4x4. I was told I would need to replace the front differential when I replace the left front CV shaft. I have never hear of these getting replaced together short of a collision.

One dealership told me it is dangerous and needs to be fixed. Sears Auto (2nd opinion, non-dealership) told me looks fine. Second dealership said it has play, not needed now, but when I replace it (CV shaft) I will need to replace the front differential also.

Is this a common situation?

Thanks,
Ed

I thought/feared the same thing when I was working on the front end of my 2012. The driver side stub/intermediate shafts are easy to find just about everywhere. the passenger side though, proved near impossible to find, and I was told the same "you need to replace the whole differential assembly." line from the dealer.

Here are two possible solutions that I have bookmarked. (found with help from others on this forum)
