Hi Everyone,

A couple of weeks ago I've noticed a small squeal every time I start to roll off after sitting awhile. I had brought to the dealer this past Friday, and of course the didn't hear it and said that my belt was bad (like an ass I didn't ask to see it). Well being that I bought it in Feb. 2015 I had given a quick thought and had them change it. The next day I didn't hear the squeal so I thought maybe they were right. Wellll yesterday the squeal was back and lasted a little longer than usual. Has anyone experience this also? I'm guessing may be the bearings but not sure. Thanks

A little more info is needed here. Would you say it is engine-speed related (goes away or changes pitch if ya let off the gas), or vehicle-speed related?

Hi thanks for replying. When I start rolling off after sitting awhile letting off the brake it starts to squeal. Then about 2 or 3 feet it stops and drives normal with no squeal. Hope that helps

It sounds like something do to with the brakes. Could be a variety of brake/pad/hub issues. Could be a bent brake dust shield rubbing against the rotor, sticking caliper, stuck pads, worn pads, pad friction-material broke off, small stone lodged between the rotor and pad/dust shield, worn hub bearings (though not likely if sound goes away), ABS module not releasing. An experienced tech (notice I didn't say 'newbie') needs to remove the wheels, put their eyes on the situation and do some analysis.

Did the dealer look at the actual brakes?

To be honest I don’t know. I did bring it in for an oil change and I mention what I’ve been hearing. Then they hit me with the belt, saying it was bad. I never heard the belt squeal I do know the difference in sounds. As you mentioned I was thinking maybe bearing or hub

Could be caliper dragging or rotor warped a bit or even moist pads/rotors. If the brakes are needed soon good time to do it all, rotors-pads-bearings-fluid, I would probably put off calipers but check the pistons. It doesnt happen when everything is warm and been traveling?

Morning thank you all for your input. I was thinking about bringing it to the dealer this Friday, but I'm going to wait for it to continue with a longer squeal this way they could hear for themselves. I don't need them to sell or tell me it's something else. Probably if all goes well I'll change the brakes, rotors, hub when it's warmer and have the proper tools let alone the money. Again Thank you

Be sure to flush brake fluid as well, the most over looked item and "could" be the cause of this. dot 4 ask for it.

Great. But don't put it off very long, it could be a failing front hub/bearings too, which could be a life-safety issue, or cause more expensive damage down the road. Best to have a thorough inspection done first, hopefully the tech (or you) can actually FIND the problem and address it. It's hard to say what the issue is. It might not even be brake/wheel/hub related. Ask the service tech, or parts guy who one of their better techs is ..before you take the truck in ...and try to get that guy to put his eyes on your truck.

Best of luck. Let us know what it turns out to be.

Next time it happens press the brake pedal and see if the noise goes away or changes pitch. Also without pressing the brake turn the steering wheel and see if anything changes

Good morning

When were the brakes last serviced?

Living in the north, as we do, brake calipers on an old vehicle need attention at least twice per year or more often.

If you plan to do your own, you don't require anything special other than maybe an extra large C clamp to compress the piston before removing the caliper.

Investigate a good silicone lubricant to apply sparely to the moving parts where the pads slide, just beware of contacting the pads or rotors surface.

The slides where the calipers move in the calipers usually get seized up with crud and if a pad is not releasing well from the rotor, it will make noise for the first couple of wheel revolutions. That's pretty usual with an older vehicle, at least in the northern states or up here in Canada.

This is a great idea and may give you an answer.

Hi RamDiver, thank you I'll try that when i get out work. That's when I'll hear it again. My apologies but I had forgotten to mention on the start off of this post, not that it will mean anything but I only have 19825 miles on it.

The number one squeaky brake pad is metallic or even semi metallic, the oem is metallic. I went to wagner oex and we have zero dust, zero squeak, and they stop better. Usually a high quality metalic will stop better then ceramic, but wagner oex will stop that truck way better then oem brakes, it was noticeable when we did our brakes in our suv. Demand wagner oex or put the job off until you can buy them. pads are 50 bucks a set of 2 on amazon. If the squeak is from the front, youn can easily save some money and just put oex on front rotors, front rotors do all the work when stopping, that is why they tend to be larger then rears. Wagner pads are like having 5 small pads, maybe that is why the stop so well, dunno? It also helps them cool, channels dissipate heat. Now, if you tow over 10k pounds, you might opt for power stop metallic, but if you dont tow or tow around 5k pounds, oex will simply be a great choice to avoid squeak.

Thank you I’m still running on the stock with good meat on them. Plus last month had a state inspection done.

See the bottom line in that graph, those pads are either causing the noise or contributing to it, if it is brake related which is most likely. I would say as long as your brake fluid is full and there arent any other symptoms, it is safe to put this off til you get a definite squeak that is easy to diagnose. A very large % of trucks have brake squeak, especially with oem rusty pads. peace

X2 on the Wagner oeX pads. Vehicle is the 1500, 4x4 2014. I have replaced the original pads with original pads. Then purchased the Wagner oeX pads for the front. The pads have been on for a little over 2 months. Great initial bite. I have the original rotors, they have never been turned. I am very easy on the brakes. Watch for yellow lights coming up and coast. No pedal pulsation. When I change pads, I scuff the rotors with 100 grit emery. The Wagner pads are the best I have have to date. I usually run Raybestos, which are good. These are VERY good. I like the high initial bite when the brake pedal is pushed. Your vehicle, your call on parts.

Just installed the Power Stop Z36 brake kit (drilled and vented rotors and ceramic pads) on a new to me 2016 Ram 1500 5.7l Sport. Crazy how well they stop truck so fast and dead smooth.

Never had a pickup that stopped this well.
