New to the forum and this is probably a redundant question but here goes.

Chasing the dreaded Hemi tick in my 2012 1500 5.7, 117,000. Fairly convinced its a lifter, but the more I read the more confused I get ,so looking for opinions before tearing into the motor. The tick is fairly loud at first start (low rpms), but as the oil warms to operating temp it becomes much quieter. The noise is much more pronounced when I put the truck in gear. Seems to be only at low rpm, but difficult to tell. Here's the mystery I need some help with, when I disconnect #5 fuel injector the noise goes completely away. My confusion is if its a lifter shouldn't it continue to make the noise?

Any help is greatly appreciated!

You may indeed have a bad injector. I'd find it unusual to have piston slap from only a single cylinder. Neither does it seem to be a lifter because the lifters are actuating full time regardless if the cylinder is combusting.

True the exhaust lifter will under more load when opening during combustion, but you would still hear the damaged ticking even if not combusting.

Have you figured out the problem? I have the exact same issue but on #8 cylinder.
