On my 2017 Ram 1500 Crew cab big horn, the spare tire is a 235/85R17. I want to replace it but can't find that size tire anywhere. What's a comparable size to put on the 17" rim or could I just get a 20" steel rim and put the regular size tire on it? Will a 20" set up still fit where the spare tire is now?

I have a full size spare on my 2024 classic. It came with 20 inch wheels, this is what is under it

When i got 2012 it had the small spare. Since I tow some with it i wanted a full size spare. I got a 20 inch steel rim, painted it and had had a tire put on it.

34.1 doesn't fit in mine.its the back of the hitch that hits/stops it.even let some(alot)of air out..just couldn't squeeze it up in there.
I've talked about this before on here I believe.
I should back track on this though..I think I have the Reese brand bumper mount reciever so that may have something to do with it.i didn't put that on,there when I bought the truck.
I also checked 3 salvage yards and of course all 3 did there computer search thing and said these trucks never came with a a 20in.steel spare rim...im like ya ok...like every auto store ,if the computer says something isn't there then it must be true for the youngins to procede otherwise their lost.
I found mine on craigslist..$20 with new rubber(to small).told the guy I didn't want the tire, wanted the rim..he said take it.

I’m jumping on this because the thread seems to have stopped.

The only link given was a $175
Wheel that is setup with 6 lug instead of 5 that a majority of 4th gens use, mine included.

Is there a cheap source for a 20” wheel that will allow the spare location hanger to work? I measured about 3” across th opening so I’d assume at least that size should work. Or can anyone confirm if the OEM 20” wheels that came on a lot of 4th gen will allow the spare tire mount to work. I’ve got a 35” tire (measured at a tad under 34”) that I kept from a recent new tire swap since 2 were good still so wanted to try this. My lift requires a 20” tire to clear front end parts, and the previous owner that did the lift only did 4 wheels so the spare is still the factory 17” :(

I got a full sized original wheel for my 2005 Magnum R/T used on eBay - 2 for my old Chevy truck used from a local garage - not expensive. I have had full sized for every car for a couple of decades. The first not expensive, the other two really cheap.

I did the same as Magfan2, bought a 3rd gen 1500's, 20" clad from the local parts yard. Did a simple mod to the wheel and now I have a some what matching full-size spare. I used a 70 mm hole saw to drill out the center, in order for the hanger to pass through.

“Full Size Spare” is a misnomer. My build sheet claims a “full size spare”…but in-fact, the four on the ground are 20” tires and the “Full size spare” is a different size tire mounted on a 18” wheel.

The “Night” edition wheels on the ground cannot be stored in the spare-tire area because the Winch-Cable-“T” will mar the 20” alloy wheels…. EVEN IF the “T” would fit inside the alloy wheels….which it won’t without serious damage to them.

The Bottom-Line is: The “spare” tire ….is only a “temporary” for the purpose of getting the vehicle to a tire-repair-station under it’s own power. The advantage of the so-called “Full Size Spare” feature is that it is not restricted from highway speed useage while getting to a place the original tire/wheel can be serviced.

Hope this helps….(even if it IS dissapointing)

Addendum: I have gone to considerable trouble over the last 40 years to have All my vehicles equipped with “genuine” full-size-spare wheels/tires.
All that has accomplished is to create another problem….of the Spare always being out-of-date with the rest of the vehicle’s tires. I’ve junked and sold a number of vehicles I no longer wanted which had virtually-Un-used spare tires with ridiculous out-of-date old tires on them….which had been purchased at additional-cost…and required additional maintenance …. .yet provided NO additional convenience.

I suggest you leave things alone, and statistically you will almost Never need or use that spare….however, if you do, it will be temporary because you are just as “picky” as I am and you will repair or replace the 4-on-the-gorund so they’ll all match.
