For those of you running cutouts, what size wire and fuse are you using?

My raceland is wired up with 12 ga wire but didn't come with an in-line fuse. When I get around to having it installed, I'm going to wire a 30amp in-line fuse holder

I've been going back and forth with the raceland "tech" today but he is too stupid to tell me what size fuse is required.

He told me that it didn't need a fuse because it used a "brain". I suppose it never occured to him that electronics need a fuse too. I tried to explain that I wasn't using the "brain" and that I was wiring it directly to a switch. He then informed me that the remote wouldn't work without the "brain". Gee, thank you Captain Obvious.

My last query was to the amperage draw during an opening/closing event. He never responded.

After dealing with this moron I would never purchase, nor recommend anyone else purchase, from this company.

lol everyone praises raceland then 1 problem and its screw raceland.

To each their own i guess lol

Get it home and put a DMM on it and fuse it for what ever it runs at. I doubt its more then 10 amps if that. Radioshack sells DMMs cheap Its worth the investment.

If you want me to find out, Steve come down to my house I can find out in less than 5 minutes what the current draw is and that will make everyone happy.

checked my wiring, 30 amp, looks like 14-16 gauge wiring.

alot of amps for little wire. the lower the voltage the higher gauge wire needed to carry the amps. In house wiring 12 gauge is only good to 20 amps.

You can get by with a smaller gauge wire (16-14 ga) with a 30 amp 12v load because it pulls current for less than 2 seconds. Typical load charts list wire size for continuous duty.

And yes, **** raceland. If you went through the ridiculous and degrading email exchange I went through, you would agree 100%.

I was able to get a straight answer from dmh on the first email. I believe it is safe to assume their cutouts have a similar current draw.

I happen to really like my Raceland cutout. And yes, I will agree their service department isn't the most helpful, they sent me a bunch of crap to try and just told me to send back whatever I didn't need to fix it. I contacted them about an issue with my cutout not working and I listed all the crap that I had tried to fix it. The guy said it would be hard to troubleshoot and considering all the things I had tried that they would just send me a new brain, wiring, and remote and that I had 2 weeks or whatever to return the stuff. I got my truck back after the lift and started messing with it and found I couldn't find anything wrong with it and it just started working again on it's own. I was about to send the stuff back today when it stopped working again this morning on the way to work. I emailed the guy and told him that the issue still wasn't resolved and he said thanks for letting him know and he would put in my file to give me more time with the stuff. That to me is nice of them to be understanding like that even though they are no help in troubleshooting it.

Well so onto my still current problem (same as before). My brain isn't getting power best I can tell. The cutout works fine with the new cord they sent. My brain works fine with the cord they sent. It's not the brain. I didn't have a fuse before; I added a 30 amp fuse and now I still get nothing. No click or nada with the brain, no trying on the cutout's part to open or close. It's hooked up direct to the battery through an inline fuse and grounded. Checked all the splices and connections. All are tight and secure.

So that's my experience with Raceland... and if anybody wants to take a crack at what I have going wrong please do.

I feel better today, but I needed to vent last night. I love my cutout, it just needs a fuse.

Since I put a fuse on mine it doesn't want to work at all. Before wired straight to the battery at least it would work off and on. It was a brand new inline fuse too.

My issue is definitely electrical.

Pretty sure the cigarette lighter connection has a fuse in it. I didn't want the direct connection to the battery.

I thought they had great customer service though. I had an issue with the remote and within a week I had a new remote and control box shipped to my door free of charge.
