I agree 89 makes my Hemi run better and gets slightly better fuel economy than 87. However I make it a point to only use Top Tier fuels and only use the other fuels when absolutely necessary. I think this is more important than running a 93 octane fuel.

I don't have 93 in my area. If there is, it's not worth the drive to get it. Only 87, 89, and 91 in the Bay Area.

I'm sure this has been a topic over and over again, so bear with me.

My revious truck... 2000 1500 with the 5.2 Magnum V8. Ran 89 octane gas. I felt like it was better for the engine.

New one... 5.7 Hemi. Manual says 89, but I've heard some things. I've heard that running 91 octane will eventually cause gunk, therefore keep to the suggested 89. Then I've heard that because of the Hemi, run premium.

I've filled up twice since I got her, the first time, 91, the second time, 89.

What do you all think?

Unless you are running a tuner, anything over 89 octane is a waste of money. To run any higher octane is a total waste. You need to change your timing and amount of fuel to gain any performance. (TUNER)

I check the fuel economy in all my vehicles, every fill up. If you drive consistently, I feel this is much more accurate gauge of how your truck is running than any feeling.

Quality of the gas is more likely to influence how your truck runs, than octane. There is some real junk gas sold around here.


In my part of the world, Marathon, and BP will get the best mpg. When in doubt, go just a little higher, when it comes to octane.

I found my limiter on my way back from Savannah GA on I 16. My cut out at 110 according to the speedo.
