I'm sure this has been a topic over and over again, so bear with me.

My revious truck... 2000 1500 with the 5.2 Magnum V8. Ran 89 octane gas. I felt like it was better for the engine.

New one... 5.7 Hemi. Manual says 89, but I've heard some things. I've heard that running 91 octane will eventually cause gunk, therefore keep to the suggested 89. Then I've heard that because of the Hemi, run premium.

I've filled up twice since I got her, the first time, 91, the second time, 89.

What do you all think?

I'm not 100% sure on the pre-09 Hemi, but from 09-present, the 5.7 Hemi is 89 octane recommended for optimum fuel economy and performance, but 87 is the minimum. With the stock calibration in the computer, the only benefit you'll have from running anything higher than 89 octane is a lighter wallet. No ifs, ands, or buts.

This forum helped me learn that lesson too. my Manuel says 89 recommended, 87 "acceptable.

I run 89, as its recommended

K.I.S.S.

EDIT: and carry a quality octane booster in the truck when you cant find anything but regular, like some places in the U.P.

say what? that makes no sense.

run whatever you like. the computer will adjust the timing accordingly. only time i run premium is when im towing. otherwise i notice no difference in economy or performance between 87, 89 or 91.

My manual says 89 is recommended for every day and 91+ for towing. So, that's what I run. No issues in almost 80k miles.

Please find. The source of your 91 causes gunk claim because I'm off to change my muffler fluid

I was told that it doesn't burn the whole molecule thus clogging fuel injectors. Didn't make sense to me either, hence the reason I ask you all.

Muffler fluid? You have that? Mine has muffler bearings. Know where I can get some red blinker fluid? Mine's low.

the fuel is already out of the injector by the time it is finished being burned.

Do you think combustion occurs inside the fuel injector and not in the combustion chamber?

Oh boy. Google needs to be your friend. But keep telling me what else you have heard. I need some entertainment on my Friday.

Why be a tool?

Here is a guy that heard something, wasn't sure about it, so he comes here to ask a question to get an educated answer. Seems like he is doing the smart thing instead of just taking what he heard and running with it.

Showing your true age happens a lot within these threads. I tend to exploit my low IQ quite often.

Showing respect and being respectful is all but gone from most of the younger generation.

Al: I honest don't think you will see or feel any difference between 89-91 (without a tuner). No junk will be formed within the chamber!

Now I don't think the 91 octane will be burned as efficiently as the 89 (without the puter calling for it). The computer will adjust for what it needs. Now if you had a tuner that was programmed with a tune that called for a 91-93 octane I would see a need.

I can definitely be here for entertainment. I laugh at myself all the time. Glad I can make you all giggle and chuckle.

Honestly, I don't remember where they said it would cause gunk or the science behind what they said. It was like the second day I had my truck.

I appreciate the answer of run 89 unless towing. So again, thank you.

Don't take the ragging seriously they are some good people and advice on this forum. You can't learn anything if you don't ask questions.

Trust me, I don't. I can take my licks just as much as the next person. I agree, you don't learn of you don't ask.

I run 89. If I'm forced to use 87, I only put enough in to get me to a better gas station. I had a Charger R/T before my RAM and filled it up with 87 once. The 5.7 didn't seem to like it, so lesson learned.

I agree 89 makes my Hemi run better and gets slightly better fuel economy than 87. However I make it a point to only use Top Tier fuels and only use the other fuels when absolutely necessary. I think this is more important than running a 93 octane fuel.

Been using 87 since day one and the 5.7 runs smooth and strong. I did run a tank of 89 when I was somewhere that only had 89 and 91. felt no difference between the 87 and 89. Currently have 35K on the odometer.
