There's an actual product that is like that, but appears to be engineered and built a bit better...

Lol yep...the stuff people do...

This is another example of why we need all the laws and regs we have today.

Not a good idea at all... under acceleration the ball coupler on the front trailer will lift. Negative tongue weight makes bad things happen.

I had some personal experience with that as a teenager. When the coupler lets go things go sideways. Literally.

I figured there would be something like this. But the physics of the set up leave me wondering what happens if it starts to sway erratically, would the fact that there is no weight to speak of at the 5th wheel hitch point make recovery harder since it looks like the second hitch point might exacerbate the sway? Normally sway will swing the towing vehicle rear back and forth a bit but the weight of the entire vehicle will generally prevent the wheels from actually sliding. In this case you have a lot less weight at either hitch point and it looks more likely to jackknife. I have never researched this set up and only experience was helping to reconnect a semi towing tandems years ago.

It would be akin to a dump truck pulling a tag trailer with a dump trailer behind it....but with MUCH less weight for a tow vehicle.

I could see doing this to move something a short distance. Long hauls? No way.
