Better look close at the back of the engine,as a 9mm should blow right through the firewall and back of the engine.

Someone lowlife discharged a 9mm across the street where my inlaws used to live. Probably a drug-related deal b/c there are some subsudized housing across the street. The bullet travelled at least 30 yards from where the spent casings were ...through a layer of stucco on the side of the place, 1/2" thick OSB (wall), insulation, through the drywall, ...through the back of a solid wood (like maple) desk ...through all the papers and crap in the desk drawer. Then through the front of the desk (again, maple) ...and hit the wood chair at the desk. The bullet got lodged where the rail meets the style of the chair back ...and split that joint (bullet was lodged in the joint). It was right above the bed where our daughter used to sleep when they were taking care of her (she wasn't there at the time thankfully.

So...I'd be surprised if it didn't go through the firewall. Hopefully you got lucky with a target load, and it didn't. I think you inadvertantly created a lot of extra work for yourself. Yeah there is wiring back there, but what works, what doesn't? What codes? That should help you. You have to take it apart anyway, so you'll get a chance to check the trajectory and what got hit.

Even if you DID hit some wiring, it is easy to solder a splice of wire and heat shrink the joints. I wouldn't be worried about fixing the wiring, as long as it didn't bust any connectors. Good luck with the repair.

:waytogo: .

Bubba got arrested for shooting the juke box.

Back when i was kid we used to shoot the old abandoned cars in a few of the local backyards, and even a short 22 would break an engine block after going through the fenders, and the fenders on alot of 50's /early 60's cars were pretty robust.I'd be amazed if a 9mm didn't go through the firewall and put a hell'va hurt on the back side of the engine if it hit the engine,if it missed the engine, there's not a hell'va lot left to stop it,and where did it end up at

Angle matters a lot, and for many of the same reasons as it matters to dropping a stone in water vs skipping a stone across the surface. Squared up to the face and you'll get penetration of the surface easier and you'll get more penetration the next thing it hits because the bullet stays more stabilized. Change the angle, and the shallower it gets the more likely it is to skip off. Even if it does penetrate, it's now much less stable and is tumbling, meaning it will both slow down faster and (more importantly) hit so that the sectional density is decreased which reduces penetration and also make it deflect more. That becomes a reinforcing spiral, even more so if the bullet fragments.

Bullet profile matters as well. Ball will skip at less of an angle than a wadcutter will. Deforming bullets that aren't barrier blind will deform and, again, have less favorable sectional density.

Example. Went though the passenger door, bounced off the center console.

I shot at '50's cars in Police Training - a 22 short doing serious damage? Lottery winning luck or a perfect shot. 200 gr 38 Special were most often inadequate. BTDT.

Well, now I know the difference we have in our ages…. Back when I was a Kid… a .22 short would barely crack the paint. It’d take a .30-30 to get thru the heavy-gauge steel fenders cars were made of back then… And there was NO aluminum… or PLASTIC…on our engines. They were cast iron and steel.

In 1972 I was flying for a pipeline-patrol company and the boss had HIS fathers 1940’s Oldsmobile sitting out in the grass, beside the gravel road that came up to the company-owned private airport. That was a cast-iron BODY on that car. (not really…but I’m illustrating how heavy-gauge the body was)

Some idiot rookie cop from Dickinson, Tx was out “patrolling” one Saturday night and ….. bored apparently…. stopped to use that Old’s as a target for his Colt .38 Police Positive revolver…. which only manaaged to DENT the fenders…but he broke out much of the glass before the boss and me came out of the hangar to see what the racket was about down the road.

I’ve never seen a man so absolutely Crazy-Angry as the boss proceeded to chew that cop out for damaging a car he’d hoped to restore some day.

Hi All -

Going to need some input on this one. I had an accidental discharge of a 9mm pistol in my truck last Saturday night.

Don’t ask.

See the attached pictures. You can clearly see the entrance hole. The bullet knocked out the whole panel with the volume, hazards, climate control, etc.

It also knocked out the electronic shifter. Had to tow the truck home.

I don’t think that the bullet punctured the firewall.

It definitely punctured the air vent ducts because a small amount of fibrous bits of insulation like material came out of the air vents.

I’ve done a couple of dash removal/installs in my life time but never on a Gen 4 Ram R/T.

So for all you guys that have done stereo upgrades… what can I expect? I’ll be removing the center portion of the dash tomorrow.

My main concern is that the bullet went through the wiring harness. If it did I am hoping I can manually fix it. Anyone familiar what is directly behind where the bullet entered the panel?

I will report back with pictures. Holding my breath.

In the meantime… does anyone know of a kit to convert my UConnect with a larger Apple Car Play unit. May as well swap it out.

And does anyone have any good sources to purchase the dash panel unit the bullet went through,

ALL INPUT APPRECIATED!

THANKS IN ADVANCE!
Not trying to be a smart @ss but I dont see a hole just a dash with a chip in it that looks like it was hit with a pellet gun not a 9mm round, I guess I'm use to my 9mm FMJ round that would have punched a very visible hole in the dash, if it had been one of my sons hollow points he made for me well lets say the hole would be at lease the size of a penny.

It 100% went through the dash, especially since he immediately stated that the electronic shifter knob stopped working after the incident and had to get his truck towed..

Why I never buy another but Glocks... Even a friend yesterday tried to sell me his HK which is also a really good gun, it ain't a Glock. You buy a sig 320 or anything known to misfire, that's on you. Either way if it was a Glock don't mention it because then we know the truth.

.22 short isn't even a reliable suicide gun. I'm not here to doubt anyone's experience, but I've seen it deflect off teeth at near contact distance, stuck in the roof of the mouth after a contact shot under the chin (did make the tongue swell, though), penetrate a leather boot and bruise but not penetrate the foot inside of it, etc.

.25 Auto isn't a ton better. If you watch your angles it'll kill you but it may take awhile. I had a warrant for a guy for shooting his landlord's brother in law and he off'd himself in a restaurant bathroom after running from a neighboring jurisdiction. .25 Auto to the temple and it took hours for his body to realize he was dead. I always kind of wonder how much of "him" was still in there as he flopped around until they sedated him.

Man you guys must of got $h!t amo then,as i've killed alot of pigs and cows with a 22,that's all we used to slaughter animals, and a pig and cow have a hell'va lot harder skulls then a human has, also put a pile of holes in cars and engine blocks with nothing more then a 22.I'm guessing the amo you guys got down south was crap to the stuff we used to get up here ;)

Hardness is only one factor. Cow skulls are pretty flat in front of the brain, humans are made to fight and rounded skulls deflect better. So do our ribs, it's literally biological armor and even duty cartridges like .45 Auto will ride them if the angle is right. Teeth are also tough AF. Then factor in we can survive with significant forebrain trauma, people live with large chunks removed. You aren't doing any riddles, but the only guarantee of an instant light's out is the brain stem.

I don't think you have any magical .22 shorts. Your gov't doesn't seem to think so either, only for calves:

Not saying a .22 short won't work for cattle or humans. It's just a lot more dicey than a .22 LR or .22 Magnum.

This is very much my wheelhouse, both with significant practical experience and academic training. A core tenant of which is "bullets do weird **** sometimes".

It isn't about what ammo can do what, it's about the correct tool for the job. Yes a .22 especially mag can kill someone, so can a 357, but one is over kill and one is under kill. ,45 is the way to go, when I was a lad I bought a nine, then at a range I shot a .45, similar recoil but a hole 3 times larger. Hot 9 loads 124 grain and up produce almost identical recoil as a .45 acp, but nowhere in the same universe as far as knockdown. Just the right tool to defend your love ones and you dashboard.

Did he actually get

Did he actually get arrested..?
I'm pretty sure he spent at least one night in the can just to sober up. He did stop it with one shot but he had a .45 which was a good shot but killing a Ram with 1 shot from a 9mm is very impressive.

I shot my RAM with a 7mm RM. Immediate lights out. 348 yards and it was the perfect shot. It was like the face of the moon where that dude was hanging. I was one of two people that beat the odds and drew a tag after 10 years of trying. Meat was barely edible.

Seriously though OP, your truck can be fixed, just a matter of how much. Glad no one was hurt.

Son had a 320 discharge laying in his driver seat while he was outside of car putting on new kydex holster on his belt. At seat top level it went through his center console and into center pillar between passenger doors.
I told him to carry that thing with empty chamber. He loved it, till he didn't. Dealer gave him full credit toward an Echelon. Dealer said they will deal with Sig on the 320.
