Help me understand my AWD/4x4 Ram 1500

I have never really understood my truck.

It has a knob that I can turn from AWD - 4 High - 4 Low.

And while I understand 4 High & 4 Low, I don't understand what my AWD is. Is it "real-time" AWD or some other variation? What does this mean when I need to get a tow, do I need a flatbed?

I believe it's auto 4 wheel drive. So when in AWD if the truck senses any tire slippage it will automatically engage 4WD. Chevy truck's have this feature.
