Hi i have a question regarding my 4x4. I shift my transfer case into 4x4 high. Then when i am driving along my indicator light turns off and there is a clunking noise up front and i lose 4x4. Then it shifts back in by itself and the light comes on and i have 4x4 once again. I need to know what this is so that i can fix it. I need this truck in the winter time to get me to a ski resort that is up a snowy mountain pass. Please Help.

Have you checked if your shift linkage is loose? Sounds like loose shift linkage allowing it to bounce in and out of 4WD and the clunking would be the gears hitting each other. I would recommend not running 4WD until you check your linkage because the gears hitting each and not meshing together is bad news.

This isn't a matter of the actuator is it? I wonder if its disengaging the front axle while the tcase is still in 4hi.

I just replaced the actuator and vacuum lines so maybe the linkage is the problem. Thanks for the replies. Will definitely check the linkage

Linkage seems def like the next thing to check then. Yeah my idea was if it wasn't holding pressure and disengaging the axle to put it in 4lo, and see if it popped out. Then you'd be able to easily tell. But no need now lol
