Ok I've been on the quest for the low budget mods and performance upgrades. So far I've acquired the used SC 3815 ($168), dropped in a high flow air filter ($30) and swapped the Hemi Hat for less restrictive tubing using a few clamps, ABS pipe, and grommet for about $30. The result was this:

First I mocked up and dry fit pieces

Then I drilled a hole and placed grommet for the IAT

IAT remains in stock location behind alternator

And here is the streamlined intake

My next mod is exhaust, and I just picked up a 24" Magnaflow SI/DO for $35 off Craigslist from a guy who swapped this for a Flowmaster after buying the truck.

I was wondering if I should do anything to address the spot of rust on the body of the muffler. magnaflow3.jpg

Would I get more life out of it by putting a couple coats of high temp paint on the muffler case, or should I just get it installed as is? I live in a temperate area with no road salt, but would hate to get this muffler installed and have it rust out .

I'd give that muffler a couple of coats of high temp paint as you suggest. It won't cost much and you can stop the rust from spreading.

They would be unstoppable with Manning, def worth fighting the parking lot at Candlestick to watch him play.

Next time I'm at auto/hardware store I'll grab a can and get it installed. More pics to come...

Nice work getting some useful upgrades at a reasonible cost. You will need it for the gas tank. As a point of reference, what is gas costing there on the left coast. The only thing Jersey has going for it is the price of gas. Just filled up with BP gold, $3.749

I fueled up at Costco a few days ago; paid $4.419 for 91 octane. You're not getting 87 for less than $4.219. Not a surprise around here being one of the most expensive places to live in the U.S.

thanks for this info , that's good to know coz when i bought my truck from USA i found on it 18 inch magnaflow muffler twin side exit (in front of rear passenger tire side ) with little rust on it and i have been told that its a copy not original one , so i took the whole exhaust out and replaced it with a cat back magnaflow part # 16700 with 24 inch muffler and i still have the old one.

Maybe it's the satin finish, rather than the case? Or could have surface rust from proximity to another oxidizing metal; I think that is the side facing the underbody of the car based on hanger location. Could it be from heat if not oxidation?

if i am in your place i would clean the rust on the muffler with soft sand paper and rust removal and then give it a couple coats of high temp paint before fitting it. As long as u r doing the exhaust u can change the restrictive factory Y pipe.

I would pick up a can of rust-oleum high heat paint. No prep needed, just put a few coats on and the rust is stopped and the muffler is protected.

Just started prep by cleaning with degreaser and steel wool, and that thing is cleaning up nice. Under the grime is a really nice looking used mufler, and most of the big spots are already cleaned up. There are some little specks of rust, but some rust remover and maybe the Dremel wire wheel should take care of it. The finish is so nice in most places it might be a shame to cover it in paint.......let me finish prep tomorrow and re-evaluate.

So here it is cleaned up, is there any benefit for painting a muffler in this condition?
