I think I am hearing the dreaded hemi tick... does it sound like a lifter tapping?

Its a normal sound. That being said when I did my first cam swap I found where mine was coming from. Number 7 intake pushrod was gawled slightly on the bottom. Some trucks show it worse then others, also Diff oils will make it act up worse. The headers will make it louder also when ya toss them on.

my mother in laws hemi ticks cause the exhaust manifold leaks at the block and it stops after the truck heats up

I have the dreaded tick also. I changed my oil the other day from 10-30 to 5-20 and it is a little more noticeable.

No exhaust leak on mine. It is louder when you first crank it and then it mellows out a little once the engine heats up.

I have heard it is normal and in the valvetrain. I have researched and read it is everything from an exhaust valve to the pushrods. I plan on ported heads as a future mod so i am not too worried about it. :) :) :)

Hmm... I'll have to pay attention, I do hear the manifolds ticking, but what I mainly hear right on start up sounds just like a lifter tapping, I wish these motors were as easy to tear into like old school lol

I think they are EASIER to tear into than the old school stuff. You don't even have to pull the intake off or remove the lifters to swap the cam.

My 07' with 58k miles just recently started ticking on start up. It will be fairly noticable for a minute or 2 but then goes away almost completely. I am going to try and torque my exhaust manifold bolts and see if it is just an exhaust leak or if I've finally got the tick...

My truck has this also. Very apparent on cold start. Can barely hear it once it is warmed up. Sounds just like a lifter tap. I know its not my exhaust gaskets or manifolds. So this is normal?

Joshwaa, it sounds like it is just a characteristic of these engines. Everyone that has said they had it hasn't had any ill effects from it. And some report having it at as low as 400 miles. When I first heard mine I thought something was really wrong but it has always driven smooth as can be and has great power. Just a noisy engine I guess?

Mine didn't tick at all until my last oil change. Went from Royal Purple to Mobile 1, now it ticks like crazy. Gonna switch back to RP as soon as possible, no way I'm running it like this for a full 5k miles.

I thought my exhaust manifolds were fine too until i hit them with a wire wheel to clean them up a little and found two hair line cracks on both manifolds. Looking into the inside of the manifold the crack and leakage was a lot more evident.

Had my truck for a while, and hit the drag strip regularly, with over 40k miles, and still no tick
